In the Legislative Council Chamber yester day afternoon the Hongkong College of Medicine for Chinese presented an address to the Hon. J. H. Stewart Lockhart, C.M.G. Rector of the College, prior to his departure to Weishai-we. There were present H.E the Officer Administering the Government (in the Chair), the Hon. J. H. Stewart Lockhart, C.M.G, | the Hon. Dr. Ho Kai, Dr. Clark, (Dean of the College), Dr. J. C. Thomson (Hon. Secretary), Dr. R. Maclean Gibson, Dr. Noble, Dr. B. Gibson, Dr. P. Krieg, and many others, includ ing a large number of the students of the Gollege.

He said-Your Excellency and gentlemen, on behalf of past students of the College, 1 desire to say à few words, expressive of our profound respect and admiration for our Rector, the Hon. I H. Stewart Lockhart, and, conveying to him publicly our sincere and heartfelt thanks for his distinguished labours for the good of the College and of the students. Since its found- ation until now, Mr. Lockhart has taken an active interest in this. College, and anything. which teneded to promote its welfare had hịs. loyal and ready support. kong College of Medicine for Chinése, a small teken of our appreciation to our Rector, Mr. Stewart Lockhart, on the eve of his departure from those scenes wherein he has laboured for more than twenty years. The severance of old ties and friendships is at best hut a saddening process, and I feel sure that, mingled with tha Justifiable pride at having been selected by His Gracious Majesty the King to govern the newest of our many British possessions in the Far East, Mr. Lockhart cannot but feel a sense of some great loss, some gap which can never again be bridged, that must ever temper, the natural elation of one who has been called to wider spheres of action, and who leaves behind him the friendships of his youth and early man- hood. Such a sense of loss; however, is even more keenly felt by those who are thus left

It is well-known that for some time past the European inhabi tants of Kowloon have been agitating for a school in which their children could be trained, and though many difficulties arose they were at last overcome and, the residents of the
