OUR LONDON LETTER.

(From our own Correspondent.)

LONDON, February 14th.

THE ANGLO-JAPANESE AGREEMENT. There is but one topic of conversation in ociety, one matter for press commaut, at the moment for a brief hour the eye of the nation is turned to the Far East, for the Anglo-Japa nase treaty was published but two days ago." To say the general publice was surprised, is to express it mildly even China Tolk for the most part were completely unprepared for so great. a departure from our traditional, if somewhat wam-out policy, of isolation. Here and there it is possible to meet with a knowing soul who had been certain "for weeks past that some- thing of the kind was in contemplation," but oddly enough these prophets, with hardly an exception, are not usually reckoned among the little band of Far-Eastern experts to whom one looks as a rule for sound infor mation. Which only goes to show how. difficalt it is for a prophet to obtain a just ap- preciation in this sceptical world! But how- however it may have been with regard to prior intelligence of the great project, there is prac fical unanimity in the Anglo-Easter Colony in London as to the value of the alliance just announced Mr. Colquhoun, whose articles to the Morning Post during the past two years, have done more to enlighten the British public on Chinese affairs, than the writings of any other single individual, is onthusiastic his praise of an agreement, of which fa believes the benefit to both parties fo be "immense." Sir Charles Cayzer, and fir Edward Sassoon are equally warm in thir expressions of satisfaction, while, the Cina League, through Mr. Yerburgh, congratuites the nation at large, and those with interest in the East in particular, on the sensible adput- ages which must accrue to trade therefor It is perhaps inevitable that China-folk spuld dwell aliost entirely on the commercia and local Imperial issues, but those few wḥ do look to the greater aspect of the question-the bearing of this alliance on the general Epire outlook, are, confident that it is as god for Greater Britain as for the Colonies, Settlelents and interests chiefly and directly affited: Among Englishmen not specially acquated
