SECOND LOYAL TOAST.

THE KING SAYS IT SHOULD BE DRUNK

-STANDING." A

Being in some doubt as to whether at dinners and public festivites the second of the loyal toasts should be drank standing or sitting, the Lord Mayor, who has been applied to for guidance, addressed to Gen. Sir Dighton Probyn an inquiry upon the subject and has received the following reply →

Privy Purse Office, Buckingham Palace,

3rd Feb, 1903. My dear Lord Mayor,—Your lordship's letter of the 27th uk. I have submitted to the King, and his Majesty commands me to thank you for it, and to say that in his opinion there can be no doubt as to what should be done at public gatherings when the toast is proposed of." Her Majestyneen Alexandra, their Royal High nesses the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the other members of the royal family"

The toast should, his Majesty says, be receiv- ed standing, and the company should not resume their seats until the first few bars of the National Anthem, to be immediately followed

A RITUALISTIC MEMORIAL

SERVICE.

In St. Matthew's "hurch, Westminster, a large congregation assembled for what was called a "requiem" for the Year's Mind" of her lato Majesty Queen Victoria-in plain words, a memorial service of airitualistic char: ncler. Ultra-Protestants had threatened to interrupt what they regarded as an attempt to imitate the Roman Mass, but better counsels prevailed, and the objectors, with one or two insignificant exceptions, wisely minded their own business, and stayed away. Most of the Jadies present were deep mouming. The service, which included the "Dies Ira" and the "Agnus Dei," was impressive and solemn, and the music was sung with great effect by a choir of men. While the congregation was separating a young man in the nave called out in a loud voice: "I protest against, what has been witnessed this morning as a blasphemy in the sight of God, and an insult to the memory of Queen Victria." The officials of the church instantly hurried the protestor to the west, door, but before departing he left a card bearing, the name of a gentleman con. nected with the Frotestant Alliance.-L. & G.. Express.

PING PONG IN PUBLIC HOUSES. It is stated, says the a home paper that in more than one public-house in London has Jarely been affixed the notice "Public Ping pong Saloon within," and that the old billiard tables have been diverted to this new use. It would seem to be a harmless alternative, but the extravagant development of the game has caused an outbreak of protest in the weekly papers. It is pointed out that two books have been published, which are both didactic and though it would be thought impossible-his- toric. Table tennis" uanse which at best.

seems a weak, and inaccurate substitute for the onomatopoetic "ping-pong "has an or gan, of its own, and, like trade, the game is following the flag. A French paper, in its enthusiasm for historical parallels, recalls that Nero fiddled an accompaniment to the burning of Rome, and suggests that the welcome of ping-pong in Africa will become in a similar way a tale typical of British degeneration; for who could imagine a lusty nation playing ping. porg when it should be facing pom-poms ? - -

Ever since the days of the Caesars, water sports seem to have had an unfailing attraction for Italians; and at the present day both plebeians land patricians take as keep in interest in the yearly swimming and diving contests in the Tiber as the Romans did in the old days. The banks of the Tiber.were some time

ego artificially raised by means of a series of egibankments, attaining the very great average height of go feet; and these lofty terracesfare lined during the hot months with innumerable bathing establishments. Water sports take place both in the Amo and the Tiber, but more especially in the last named river, as the Amo is so insignificant that it has literally to be "held up" by a transverse dam about half a rails below the Ponte Vecchio. The idea of diving on a bicycle originated with a bright and clever Roman youth of twenty-two, named Umberto Diamanti-a feat which called for nerve and daring of a high order, together with the ability of a powerful and rapid swimmer. The idea was to rush along the top of the artificial om bankment of the Tiber and plunge into the tivar, beyond. The diver must retain control over the machine not only leaving terra firma and plunging diully into mid-air, but also during the awful and breath catching descent, to the surface of the water. After sinking deep down with the machine, he swims to land with it- most awkward and even dangerous " rescue" to effect when beyond one's depth.

A very interesting contest was arranged bet- ween young Diamanti as a cyclist and his rival, This weird and extremely Borghi, on foot. novel race was easily won by the fron-nerved cyclist, both as regards time and clean jumping There was tremendous excitement just before Neither the CAPTAIN, the AGENTS, par the the race came off, and dense crowds lined the OWNERS will be RESPONSIBLE for any high embankment that skirts the Tiber The DEBT contracted by the Officers or the Crews excitement was quite at lever beat when the Hongkong Harbour
