"CANTON-NOTES:

[From our own Correspondent.

GANTON, February 25th.

was set upon by soma Chinese and roughly handled and deprived of his outfit. He was then returned to Heung Shan bruised and wounded and, as Mr. Iliff happened that way, he was handed over to him and together they reached Canion yesterday,

I have not yet learned why the Chinese objected to this man travelling through the country. The Chinese are unusually friendly and quiet at present. Missionaries aro travel- ling through every part of the province without molestation. It is very probable that ignorance of the language brought the correspondent into trouble which came very, near costing him his life.

REPORT ON THE VICTORIA GAOL, FOR THE YEAR 1901,

The following Report was laid before the Legislative Council this afternoon

PRISON DEPARTMENT. Hongkong, 24th January, 1902. Sir, I have the honour to submit, for the in- formation of His Excellency the Officer Ad- ministering the Government, the following re port on the Victória Gaol, for the year, 1905.

4. The number of prisoners admitted to the Gaol under sentence from the Ordinary Courts

was 4,858, besides 182 soldiers and sailors sen- tenced by Courts Martial. There were 29 pers sons, admitted for debt, and 8 in default of finding security, making a total of 5,077. Of

these, 679 were old offenders

3. The corresponding numbers for the pre- ceding year were respectively as follows: Convicted by the Ordinary Gourts

Courts Martial .....................

In default of fading security...

12

* Total, including 702 old offenders 5,432 The daily average number of prisoners co- fined in the Gaol was 459, as compared with 486 for the year 1900, **

4. There were 334 prisoners convicted from the New Territory during the year, of whom,"" 35 were sentenced to 2 years and upwards.

There were 180 convicts in the. Gaol on the." 31st December, 1901, against 141 on the 31st. December, 1900, 96 on the 31st December, 1899, and 55 on the 31st December, 1899, show- ing an increase of 125 per cent during the past

3 years.

The military and naval prisoners sentenced by Courts-Martial and admitted to the Gaol during the year show an increase of 55 per cent over that of the preceding year, and 93 per cent in excess of these admitted in 1899. This increase is doubtless owing to the large number of soldiers and sailors serving in North China during the military operations last year.

5. The number of prisoners admitted to the Gaol for offences not of a criminal nature was 2,345, made up as follows:- Convicted under the Opium Ordinance
