Your and with the said advice, appoint and declare, Directors are pleaser! to know that their choice that henceforth, so far as conveniently may be, has been so heartily, endorsed by yourselves on aft occasions and in all instruments wherein and the public generally. If 1 personally have Our Style and Titles are used, the following any advice at present to give the new Chief addition shall be maile in the Style and Titles Manager it is to rigidly follow the policy pur- at present appertaining to the Imperial Crown sited by Sir Thomas Jackson of building up of the United Kingdom and its Dependencies i the Reserves of the Bank and to set his face bat is, to say, in the Latin tongue, after the, like flint against the clanwar of speculators for word "Britanniarum," these words words "et bigger and still bigger dividends, a compliance errarium transmarinarum quae in ditione sunt with which has weakened many a prosperous" Britannica; and in the English - tangue, after the words "of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland," these words, " and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas"

concern.

Before moving the adoption of the report and accounts I shall be pleased to answer any ques. tions you may wish to put. As I dựn't think there are any questions, I beg to move that the report and accounts as presented be adopted and passed. Will somebody kindly second

that, ?

Mr. Medhurst suid-1 feel sure that the re- port and accounts showing such very satisfac tory results will meet with great approval from all the shareholders. The fact that the Direc tors are able to recommend a dividend and bonus of £2 per share in the face of a fall in exchange of ir per cent during the past twelve months, besides transferring a very substantial sum to reserve, and writing down bank premises account shows and speaks polumes for the management (applause). The bonus of 15 per cent to the staff will, I felt sure, commend itself to every shareholder. It is indeed satisfactory to know that the Bank is to-day in a stronger financial position than it ever has been, and to be assured that the future gives every indian tion of continued prosperity. The Anglo- Japanese agreemeet just issued will undoubted

ly tend to the preservation of peace and con- fidence in the "Far East (applause) and will lead to increased enterprise and trade, and, with others the Hongkong Banking Corpora tion should greatly benefit (applause). The Chairman has referred to the approaching re- tirement of Sir Thomas Jackson, who has with such signal success for ser a quarter of a century directed its destinies, and I am sure the Shareholders will be in accord with any recognition that the Director's may make to mark their and the Shareholders appreciation of his services (applause). In wishing Sir Thomas Jackson many years. of happiness at home I feci, as I think you all do, that we hope the Directors may long retain the advantage of his advice and the benefit of his greal experience (applause). With these few remarks I beg to second the adoption of the report and accounts. The motion was put to the meeting and car ried unanimously,"

DIRECTORS,

..

On the proposition of Mr. J. S. Van Buren, seconded by Mr. R. K. Leigh, Messrs. R. L. Richardson and H. W. Slade were unanimous ly re-elected directors.

AUDITORS.

Mr. Palmer proposed and Mr. Hancock seconded that Messrs. F. Henderson and C. S. Sharp be re-elected nuditors. The motion was carried.

A vote of thanks was proposed to the directors for the able manner in which they had carried on their arduous duties recently for the welfare

of the Bank.

fa reply the Chairman said-I am much obliged to you, on behalf of my colleagues and myself for the vote of thanks you have passed. It is Addison, I believe, who says, "Tis not in mortals to command success," but when I look at Sir Thomas Jackson I am not so sure of that statement, but we directors will do our best to prove it.

The meeting then closed.
