Still, nobody can blane the Chinese for taking full advantage of their annual holiday; They do not, as we do, work six days out of the seven, but carry on their businesses from year's end to year's end without a break, except at New Year, and then they take the whole of their Bank Holidays in a lump, instead of spreading them out over the whole year as we do. To the European mind there is something strange in the thought of such a general cessation of work as occurs in China, but "East is East and West is West" and national customs must differ the world over. This is the only time in the year when our servants, apart from the time- honoured excuse that "Olo father b'long sick." require a real holiday, and taking all things into consideration they well deserve it, for nobody can accuse the boy of being at all particulay about his "Sunday out" as is the European maidservant.

How the Empire of China has fared during the past year we all know too well. The whole time has been spent in long dragged out negotiations with the Powers for the settlement of the claims arising from the Boxer trouble, and even now they are not by any means concluded. Trade has,
