The Chairman said that Sir Ernest Sawow had taken the matter up vigorously. He had made demands on the Peking Government that the Native Custouts at Canton should be removed from the hands of the Hoppo and placed under control of the Imperial Maritime Customs, as had been done in other ports. He hoped that these representations would have a speedy effect, and he though that the Minister was entitled to credit for his prompt action.

Mr. Vernon has in fact laid a proposal be. fore the Goverment to fun a steamer himself daily to Chefoo on receipt of a subsidy. At present a small Japanese steamer receives $30 a month for making the 50 mile trip three times a week. This little vessel, however, shown a quite exceptional regard for her own safety and does not venture forth in anything like a sea. THE ENGLISH SCHOOL.

This new institution has completed its second term and is shortly to commence its third, Last session it numbered, something over twenty

pupils of whom about half, I am told, were boarders. The premises received a visit of in- spection a short time ago from Major General Si A. Dorward, K.C.B., D.S.O. accompanied by Major Cowan, R. E., and other members of his staff. A new school-room has been pre- pared for the coming term, 40 feet by 14, with accommodation for 30 single desks. The two dormitories are almost as large. A playing field and tennis court are within easy reach. Besides the ordinary form subjects, instruction is given in Classics, in the various bran ches of Mathematics, in French and German, Book-keeping and Shorthand, the Piano- fore and Class-singing: Drawing, Free- hand and Geometrical. The masters qualified so with excellent references, who have gained their experience-learnt their business, shall I say—in English schools of, a good class. The pupils seem to be drawn mainly from Shanghai, Newchwang and Che fan; though ond, I understand, is from Ganton. Judging by the lusty cheers with which the vessels arriving from longong or having call-youngsters broke up for the Christmas: Holi- ed at this port are subject in Netherlands-India days, there already exists, in this young insti to a quarantine of ten days from the date of} tution, a praiseworthy esprit de corps. departure from this port or since the last case of plague on board,
