DEATH OF AN OLD SHANGHAI, RESIDENT.

THE LATE MR. E. P. WICKHAM,

It is with very deep regret that we have to announce that 'Mr. Edwart Provis Wickham passed away late on Saturday night after a long and weary illness borne with exemplary patience and fortitude, says the N. C. D. Nejus. Mr. Wickham came to Shanghai from Australia, whither circumstances had taken him from England, his native country, some twenty years ago, and shortly after his arrival joined the firm of Beelock & Co., in which he remained for many years, having only lately established himself in business, as the repre- sentative of a Japanese firm of colliery proprie.. tors. A thoroughly upright genial gentleman, Mr. Wickham rapidly became a favourite in Shanghai, and his marriage to Miss Phillippe increased his popularity. He was a lover of sport and an ardent 'volunteer, his services to the Light Horse having been of the most de- voted and valuable character. The dance which that gallant unit had announced for this even. ing is of course postponed. Mr. Wickham was at one time Adjutant of the S.V.C. What adds to the sadness of his premature death is the fact that his widow,, who has the sympathy of all Shanghai in her loss, is herself seriously ill, and it has been at great personal risk that she has been able to attend upon her husband us the end drew near.

The

INTERESTING CEREMONY AT SHANGHAI

Liaut-Colonel Valette, Commander of the French garrison, was decorated with the cross of the Legion of Honour on Saturday, the event being made the occasion of a very interesting ceremony on the French Bund, which was wit nessed by several thousand spectators says the N. The men lined up on each side of the Bund, immediately in front of the Consulate where Lieut.-Colonel Valette, who rode a magnificent charger, dis- mounted. Here were gathered the Consul General, M. Ratard, Commander Lefevre of the French cruiser Bugenud, along with the officers of the Consular staff, and naval officers, attired. in their brilliant uniforms. Commander Lefevre pinned the decoration on the recipient's breast, R.G.A., 34th, Coy., Off. and in a short and appropriate speech congra

The tollowing gem is culled from the columns of a Nagasaki vernacular paper, the Kayshu finodi Shimbun, which rejoices tu an English column.
