Glory, bars Orlando, 5 cars Arethusa, 6 cars ........ There were no less than 11 entries for this event, which was very hardly contested through out. Sortly after the start an oar broke in two boats but new ones were quickly put out, Protests were lodged against a couple of the competing boats for using fresh cars. Owing to this the final decision was deferred until the Committee should have considered the protest,
DEPARTURE OF, THE HON. H. E. POLLOCK, K.C. Taking with him the best wishes of all Colonial residents the Hon. H. E. Pollock, K.C. loft Hongkong yesterday bound for Fiji where he is taking up his recent appointment as At torney General. He is travelling by the steam- ship Eastern and will go via Manila and Aus tralia. He was a resident of the Colony for many years and had made many friends, not only among the legal professen but in many branches of our social life. In 1888 the Acting Puisne Judge, His Lordship T Ser combe Smith, who was then Acting. Police Magistrate. reverted to his own position of Assistant in the Register-General's Depart ment, the post was offered to Dr. Ho Kai who. after consideration, declined it, the same being afterwards given to the Mr. H. E. Pollrek, bar rister-at-law, on the 18ilt September. Another important appointment was in store for him four years later, when in June, 1892, he was made Acting Puisne Judge in the place of Mr. F. Clarke during the absence of the Chief Justice. Sir Fielding Clarke, the Chief Justice, took his departure from the Colorly on the 15th January, 1896, and Mr. Goodman, the Attorney General, was gitzetted Acting Chief Justice, and Mr. Pollock, Acting Attorney General. In that capacity he has appeared in all the leading cases for several years past, and everyone is. well aware of the conspicuous ability and care with which he always performed his du ics, As His Excellency recently stated, nebody could know more clearly than the Governor of the Colony what an immense amount of public duty devolved upon the Attorney-General. "He is responsible," said His Excellency, "for the
legal aspect of everything that passes through the 'olonial Secretary's office and for the set- ilement of a these various legal questions that, even in simple maters, present them. selves for the Governor's consideration.' I wish myself to express my personal obligation to. The Acting-Attorney-General for the im mense and'reatly assistance I always received from him in every matter that came before us," Everyone will heartly reciprocate those words of great appreciation spoken by Sir Henry Blake- in bidding farewell to the Hon. Mr. Pollock. But in addition to his many and varied duties as a member of the Legislative Council and as Acting Attorney General, Mr. Pallock evinced the keenest interest in other phases of our Colonial life He was an ardent worker in the cause of the Hongkong Branch of the Navy League, and was deeply devoted to the Odd Volumes Society. To him the tongkong Chess Club owes its existence, and the Victoria Recreation Club is deeply indebted to him for many acts of kindness. Not the least of his estimable qualities is his generosity and kindly feeling towards those struggling in the lower path of life, and many will miss his help and sympathy, though, ad will join in wishing him a' good voyage and a most successful career,

A STRONG MAN IN THE EAST. GODO
Nobody has been surprised, but all have been glad to hear, says Black and White, of the appointment to the post of Governor of Singapore of Sir Frank Sweetenham. The ap palotment is one of those eminently happy ones, at which not a grumble can be raised in any quarter. Sir Frank is not merely a man who has striven bravely in the face of grave difficulties,, but has the proud distinction, denied to many men, of having accomplished that at which he aimed. He has done wonders for the Malay States. Probably no-English- man wields greater influence in the Far East than he is life in the Straits Settlements began nearly a generation ago. He com.
