I must not be forgotten that, so far, all pre. cautionary measures are necessarily of an experimental nature. Hongkong had the doubtful honour of first introducing

world during the plague to the notice of the civilized century and, to say the least of it, it seems some what unreasonable for Hongkong to wish to wait for reports froin other quarters before adopting any preventive measure, no mat- ter how experimental in character in may be. The only other dissentient to the pro- posal was Mr. BREWIN. Whether he, in his tender-heartedness, has taken up a brief for the rats and is grieved at the thought of their freedom being restricted we know not. What we do think, however, is that as he is neither a medical expert nor a Public Works man, and so unqualified to give an opinion on the question, it would have been better had be refrained from voting on the matter at all. But there--some people will rush in.

The cleansing of the Colony seems to betoonites will grieve to see the police appearing making good progress, and it is to be hoped that it will prove to be bencficial and, either keep off the plague altogether, or atleast mini- mise the virulence of the annual epidemic, To clean up the town before the expected outbreak of plague is certainly a step in the right direction and will, we hope, lead to other measures being taken in time. The work is being carried out in the right way too. That is to say, as little annoyance as A. S. WATSON & CO., possible is given to the Chinese and they are allowed to cleanse their own premises, under supervision, if they wish to. This will lead we hope, to the Chinese seeing the be nefit of keeping their houses spick and span. If they once see that those who have dirty premises are put to inconvenience, while those who keep themselves and their houses clean are left alone, they will soon come to see that cleanliness pays in the long run and the Chinaman is quite capable of grasp ing this fact.

McMurtric, having lost the toss, kicked off from the Eastern End at 4.20. Open play

followed and five minutes from the start, off a scrum in the Club's twenty-five, Royds scored for the Navy dangerously near the posts, Roper had no difficulty in converting. From this point up to half-time the Club pack worked splendidly and, if anything, had the better of the game. But though a try, on several occasions looked imminent the Navy's defence was too good

In the second "half" the Naval three

quarter line, in better condition and with much superior pace, romped round their opponents and scored three times, Royds getting in twice, and Cossey once. Roper failed in two of his kicks, and the game ended in a win for the Navy by a goals and tries-16 points to wil.

For the winners all played well, but the three- quarters were especially prominent, Royds and Noble in particular. It is very seldom that the Navy can turn at such an excellent all-round team.

On the Club side, the forwards all worked like Trojans, and were better than the Naval Park their weight more than compensating the gossipped at the London Docks that the P.

TRAGIC STORY FROM TO-KWA-WAN: The facts of a strange story with a tragic ending have come to light. About nine o'clock on the evening of the 25th November Wong Yung went to the Hung Hom station suffering from burns on the hands and lower part of the body. He had been living by himself in an unnumbered house at To-Kwa-Wan, and while eating his rice a cat jumped on to the table up setting a kerosine lamp which exploded and covered the unfortunate man in burning oil. Sergt. Gordon dressed his wounds upon his arrival at the station, and afterwards had him removed in an ambulance to the Hospital where he recently succumbed to his injuries. NOTES AND COMMENTS...

Plague Measures. Mr. OSBORNE's plea for rat-proof drains will, we imagine, receive the support of the whole community. If the rats can be pre- vented from passing to and fro between the sewers and storm water drains and the houses one hall of the battle against them will have been won, for it is a well known fact that these pests do not as a rule remain in the houses during the daytime, but retire to the drains, returning to the houses once more in search of food after nightfall.

We are sorry to see that Mr. CHATHAM has objections to place in the way of Mr. OSBORNE'S proposal. He cannot see how
