The Chairman said it was with great pleasure that he took the chair that day at that, the first annual meeting of the Hongkong Nursing Institution, which, as they knew, was inaugurated in the early part of this year, thought they might say that up to the ́ ́present it had been a great success, and had filled a great want in the Colony. Hitherto they had been staying at the Peak Hospital, and the arrangements in that respect had been found to work very well. They had, however applied to the Government for help out of the Jubilee fund that was collected in 1897 and part of which was devoted to the Womens and Children's Hos pital, and for providing nurses for the Colony. The Government, while acknowledging the In- stitution had a claim on the Fund pointed out that practically the whole of it was being used in the building of a hospital in Barker Road, Consequently they wrote to the Hospital in Barker Road asking for three rooms for their nurses, and a reply was received to the effect that the whole of the space in the building was arranged for the waïds, and nurses employed at that establishment and that they

$12,000, included in the Colonial Estimate for 1901-02, for building a house to accommodate the nurses belonging to the Hongkong Nursing Institute, I have been, requested by my Com- mitee to lay before you the following pro- posal. The temporary arangement for hous ing the nurses at the Peak Ilospital has been found to work exceedingly well as the position is very central and the nurses appreciate having the companionship of other nurses when off duty. Further, if the nurses are housed in a separate building, the Committee feel that it would be necessary to have a matroni or housekeeper to look after the house when the nurses were both away on duty, and that this and the separate staff of servants would involve the Institution is considerably increased expenditure. My commistec have reason to understand that this arrangement can be con- tinued if required. I am therefore asked to propose to you, for your consideration that the capital sum voted of $12,000 should be handed to the trustees of the Institute for investment subject to your approval, and that the income of such investment should be devoted to the payment of expenses for lodging at the Peak Hospital. In Answer to that a leller had been received stating that the proposal had been forwarded to the Colonial Office and the Gavorament had recommended its adoption. Perhaps they might hope that in the future they might have a separate nursing Institution and a home for the nurses, but at present they did not fest justified in' starting such an establish ment because it would envolve them in a large expenditure. He concluded by stat ing his willingness to answer any questions that might be put to him, and at a later stage proposed that the accounts, as shown in the report be accepted and passed.

NATIVE RUMOURS ABOUT HIM,
It is very strange, rays the Mercury, that no news is being telegraphed or nothing lately has been heard of Prince Chun. According to rumours current in official circles here and at Peking, Chus will be shortly sent on a special mission to Thibet. It is considered that if this is true it means nothing less than banishment.
