BOXING AS AN AID TO WARFARE,
HOW AN OFficer TurnED THE TABLES,
A NEW STEAMSHIP SERVICE.
The establishment of a føst steamship service between Canada and Great Britain, which has been under discussion for some years, Dow seems nearing a successful termination: Sir Christopher Furness, who is investigating the conditions in Canada, announces that British capital will be ready to embark in the enterprise as soon as a number of obstacles have been cleared away, Sir Cl Furness had a conference with Lard Strath- cona on the subject, and afterwards announced that they were in perfect agreement regarding y the requirements of the case, Lord Strathcona expressing himself as intensely interested la the success of the project. Où returning to
·England Sir C. Furness will report to the large British capitalists interested on the results of his investigations.
BOER REPRISALS,
A DENIAL.
A positive denial is given by Boer officials to the statement of the Fester Lloyd that at a conference of Mr. Kruger with Dr. Leyds'and' the Boer representatives, at Hilversum, there was a discussion of the measures of reprisals
to
be taken against the execution of Boers by the British in South Africa, and that the Boer representatives urged The last South African mail brings parti- the shooting of a British officer for culars of an exciting incident that occurred each Boer executed by the British. Phillips, commanding the 13th (Shropshire) months ago. This subject was not discussed Company Imperial Yeomanry, the ex-English then, nor was it broached when `Messrs. amateur heavy-weight champion boxer, 'was Wolmamas and Wessels paid a visit to Mr. the hero. Capt. Phillips, it seems, was going | Kruger to congratulate him on his birthday. his rounds visiting his sentries on the outskirts of the camp, when, in an isolated position, he was suddenly confronted by three Boers, of whom two were armed. They made himprisoner, and at once proceeded to divest him, in the usual fashion, of his personal property, uniform, &c. They had got possession of pretty well everything except his spurs, which they
ondered him to remove. He declined, at the same time telling his captors that if they wanted them they must take them themselves, whereupon two stooped down' to unfasten the straps, Capt. Phillips being covered with the tifle of the third man. No sooner, however, had the two men got into the kreating position than Capt. Phillips with two well-directed blows, bowled them both over, and, seizing the Mauser of one, which had been incautiously | laid on the ground, felled the Boer who was "covering him with a tremendous blow on the side of the head with the butt-end of the rifle, giving him his quietus, not, however, before he had fired, the bullet passing uncomfortably near to the gallant officer's head. Capt. Phillips then turned the tables by securing the two Boers prisoners and marching them into CAMP+
TO SUPPRESS ANARCHISM.
OLD AGE PENSIONS.
A novel system of old-age pensions has been inaugurated in a district of Banffshire, through the generosity of a native of the county who has risen to greatness. The benefactor is ord Mount Stephen, who since he achieved success with the Canadian Pacific. Railway, has shown an enger desire to share his wealth with his old friends in the North. His Lordship's first idea was to establish thirty pensions of the value of £16 per annum for old people in the parishes of Glenrinnes and Morifach. Over 120 applicants came forward, and, in order to dimin- ish the number of disappointments, the number of pensions was increased to 50. The recipients, have now been selected, and they will enter into their bounty forthwith. Some of them were on the poor roll, and the general hndy of ratepayers will benefit slightly by being relieved of a burden of £70. The pensioners are mostly well up in years, the men ranging from 62 to 88, and the women from 59 to 84: Seven of the recipients were chosen by Lord Mount Stephen; the other 43 were selected by the trustees to whom he has committed the ad- ministration of the scheme, and finely ap proved by him. “
PROPELLER FITTED AT SEA,
A Bill providing for the suppression of an- archisin in the United States has been drawn up for presentation to the next session of Congress; when it will probably become law. The measure has been carefully ex- amined by prominent members of the Ad- ministration and of Congress, and no fault is found with it. The measure provides that "no alien anarchist shall hereafterward, the stern was raised out of the water and
be permitted to land at any port of the United States or be admitted into the United States; but this prohibition shall not apply to political refugees other than anarchists. Power is given to federal officers at the different parts of entry to examine all suspects, and testimony for warded by foreign Governments or foreign police is to be accepted as prima facie svid- CDCO.
MISS STONE'S CAPTURE BY BRIGANDS.
The steamer Titania, Capt. McMillan, lost her propeller when 19 days out from Cape Town to Monte Video, and was het pless in a somewhat unfrequented track of the Atlantic She carried a square propeller ned as effort was at once made to fix it. By by llasting for
after nine hour's hard work the new propeller was got into position. The vessel arrived at Monte Video without further mist ap and it was found that the work had been so satisfactòrily done that she was able to proceed with a cargo. to a Contental port and thence, without further repairs, to Barry where the loaded about 4,000 tons of coals for Singapore.
