But his go must it be overrated. The bowling at the time the runs were coming most freely was wishy-washy boy's stuff; ill-judged, not straight, no length, and once hit fielded loosely. I have these words from the Chancellor in

joined between the 1st of January and the 15th August 1900. Provincial and departmental branches have been formed for the extension of the German Empire-with the exception of parts of Thuringia, these branches already exist in every part of Germany. I have it from the Kanzleramt in Berlin that the League in- tend to be represented in every Village and every Parish. The League's words are "Der Deutsche Flatten: Verein muss in jeder Onts chaft und in jeder Gemeinde vertreten sein." The Head Office hopes to be assisted in this work by every German." To contribute to the strengthening of Germany at Sea is considered the duty of each loyal Patriot towards the Fatherland. The most essential point which the Branches of the German League are charged ever to tear in mind is the enrolikent of numerous Members. Will our League's Members also bear that in mind?

The greatest importance is attached to the enrolment of whole Associations, Companies and Corporations ("Korpeschaftliche Mitglic der").Of these no fewer than 824 have joined in a corporate capacity.

It would occupy too much of your valuable space to mention all of these, but I may indicate a few as examples, to be followed, } sincerely hope, by corporate bodies in Great Britain and Ireland who have infinitely more to safeguard than Germany has. To refer to the first head-we are at a very serious disadvantage as compared with Ger- 1many, but then the British Constitution is such a superfine one (absolutely incapable of amend- ment (?)) that, until it is amended, we must go on labouring under this among other disadvant ages to the great detriment of, and some dan. ger to, our Country. This Constitution, care. fully built up during many centuries, has at last become so formidable--a veritable Bogey in fact that some of us are afraid to look it in the face. The British Empire may disappear off the face of the earth, but its Constitution (like a disembodied spirit) must remain intact. There are many thoughtful people who are not of that opinion

The selection of the representative X1, as given below, is undoubtedly a wise one with the exception, that Burnie should have been included in place of Franklin These gentle men have three evenings to practice, and if they will refrain from trying to send a message to Mars when baiting, and the trundlers will try bowling with their heads, Major Dorchill may yet achieve a victory with his undoubtedly good generalship.

THE ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER.

At the Police Count yesterday, afternoon-be- fore Mr. J. H. Kemp.. Miguel Hilaris Roxas, a Filipino, was charged with the attempted murder of Madame Monroy de Zazza in College Gardens on the 9th September.

Evidence was adduced on behalf of the prisoner that he went to the Western Hotel with a Spanish lady. The witness, a Chinese woman, was unable to continue her evidence.

The proprietor of the Western, Hotel said that the prisoner was employed by him for about a year, and gave satisfaction. He bore a good character.

The Manager of the International Hotel was also called and testified to the prisoner's having applied for a room at the Hotel about two month's ago.. The prisoner was then accompanied by a Spanish woman.

The remainder of the evidence was to the same effect.

"The case was resumed this afternoon.
