THE AFGHAN' SITUATION,

RUSSIAN DESIGNS.

PRESSING FORWARD.

EXPERT OPINION.

The latest new from Afghanistan further con firms the information of the Amir's death; and, what is of the highest importance, seems to indicate that the succession bas" passed to finbiballah. without demonstration other than that of satisfaction. As has been pointed out, the next element in the drama is Russia. Will she remain quiet on her frontier, and, if she does not, what will be her object? A serious attempt at the invasion of India is out of the question, but that does not entirely, preclude an attempt to sprove the Russian position on the Afghan-Russe frontier and lend to counter-moves on the British side which would result, whatever their ultimate political outcome, in complications of a highly costly and wholly undesirable. nature The talk of an invasion of India at this moment is as ridiculous, actwithstanding our South African complications, as it always has been Russia bay not the smallest wish to enter inte a costly campaign, even if she had the financial power. If Russiaever does sweep over the Indian peninsula it will be a nove which will be practically unopposed by- British arms, and, if resistance there be, it will he from the Natives of India themselves. Before that attempted con quest takes place, British Power will be as mori- bund as that of Spain. She will have ceased, by the operations of other circumstances than those of war to be a world Power, and the British- will have fled from India as the Romans fled from the British Isles. Macaulay's New Zea lander may stand on London Bridge and view the remains of a grand capital, 'but if that event is in the womb of time, the indications of its approach are not yet, and we can, dismiss the theory as too highly speculative and of no practical importance to those now living.
