to sift the evidence, available on the paint, Mr. Naoroji devotes his pea to enlightening the mind of hame felk and though in the absence of any means of checking his figures, it is difficult to avoid a suspicion that exag- geration may have crept in unawares, the book is still one to give every thoughtful imperialist pause. The three points around which the whole argument centrès-pre-

4. The average taxation abnormally-high in proportion to income.

To bese factors, he mainly attributes the condition of appalling misery, which he dep CIA, and the decrease in po, ulation revealed by the last census. In the previous decade the in- crease was 34 millions, so the stationary figures on this occasion are equivalent to a heavy fall. In calling the attention of the English people diese matters, Mr. Nanioji is performing an. Imperial service. The book deserves study.
DR. ORONHYATEKHA,
One of the most interesting personalities who' ever visited these shores is now staying for a few days at the Hongkong Hotel on his way to Aus tralia As the following extract from The Forister will show, the Doctor's present eminent position is a living testimony, to what can be done by will power and brains under the most disadvantageous circumstances imaginable. The romantic story of his birth, early struggles and varied education is as a twice-lold tale already, but one too full of dramatic situations to ever lose in interest. He was born on the Six Nations Indian Reservation, near Irantford, Ont., on the 10th August, 1841; his education was begun at home in an Industrial Schoul established by
after
"The New England Company" for the train. ing of young Indians. When he graduated from this school his parents deemed his educa. tion finished and were opposed to his wasting any further, time in educational institutions: Being unable to persuade them to consent an further study he left the "Reservation" and wandered, when scarcely 14 ́years of -page, to the Wesleyan Academy at. Wil-
braham, Mass., where he spent two years, which he returned home and taught school among his people for a year before going to Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, where he te- mained three years. But as be finished at Ken- yon College, the preparat ry course of two years, none year, his three years at Gambier counted scholastically or four years. This collegiate course was followed by another. at Toronto University, he all the while being entirely depen- dent upon bis own resources. But adversity
we know is not unfrequently the most health. ful ingredient in the cup of human ex- perience and the best tonic. to brace the mind for those encounters in which virtue is proved, renown achieved and success won, developing by paties: toll and many hard knocks the genuine, bist destroying the spurious. Even as early as Kanyon College days we find in the chamcter of Dr. Oronhyatekha evidences of that shrewdness, boldness and resource as an organizer that has marked his entire course. Appropos of these characteris- tics is a story coming from his college associates to the effect that, finding his limited exchequer nearly exhausted at the end of one term and the cliances for another consequently at the vanishing point, he organized an Indian show, with one "real" Indian and several of the most raw-boned white men he could induce to receive instructions in war dances, songs and blood-curdling war whoops and io be be: painted and feather-trimmed to suit, the requirements of the occasion, he put in the vacation "starring" through the country, with the result that the next session found the young showman in the language of the street with money to burn."
THE PARTING OF THE WAYS.
It was while Oranbyatekha was, a student at Kenyon College that the Prince of Wales made his memorable visit to Canada. The Chiefs of the Six Nations deputized him to deliver their address to the son of their "Great

On one occasion, when it was Oronhyatekha's tum to read, not being yet acquainted with all the Saints and their days, he read the ordinary leston of the day, When he got through with that, it being St. Mathias' Day, the Vice- Principal said, with his usual sweet voice," Mr. Oronhyatekha, will you please read the first Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, beginning at the fifteenth verse," which was, of course, done, as if it were quite the usual thing to do. "After Chapel one of his student friends asked, "What did you think when he asked you to read another Lesson? Weren't you horribly mortified?" Oronhyato ha paralyzed his friend by replying, "Why, no I thought at first the Vice-Prin- cipal was very rude for interrupting the ser- yica and then I came to the conclusion that he was so charmed with my reading that he wanted more of it. However, the Vice Principal made up very handsomely for his "rudeness," for that every evening he invited Oronhyatekba to his rooms and presented him with a book, which is very much prized even to this day, containing on the fly-leaf the words, St Mathias Day, Oxford," and the autograph of the Vice-Principal, who afterwards as one of the Canons of St. Paul's London, became one of the popular preachers of the day, ada kendi
