CORRESPONDENCE.
{We do not necessarily endorse the'opinions expressed by Correspondent in this colusun.).
To the Editor of the "Hongkong TelegrapH. “
THE SALARIES QUESTION. SIR-With reference to your article of the 18th instant, re "Salaries for Subordinate Offi. cers," I think the least thing that could be done would be to give the remaining three departments their increase of pay,las they are put to more expense than any other department for ins- tance the Police and Gaot have free quarters, fuel and light, servants, etc., and these could not be obtained in the Colony for $60 per mensem and be comfortable.
The single man has no expenditure, as he can join with a suit of clothes on his back, being provided with bedding, clothing, and boots; washing being done at a very reason. able rate.
Yours faithfully,
ONE OF THEM. Hongkong, October 21st, 1901.
