OUR CIVIL SERVANTS,

SPLENDID TESTIMONY TO THEIR HIGH PHYSICAL STANDARD.

There are those who still believe, that the strain of a civil service examination injures the health of the candidate. A part of the report of the Civil Service Commissioners, just issued, is directed towards rebutting that belief.

A few figures are first given. We find that the percentage of first-class clerks rejected on medical grounds is 1.1 per cent., for second the mere fraction of .55 per cent. division clerkships 6.7 per cent, for boy clerks

But assistants of customs are rejected to the extent of nearly 8 per cent, women P, O. clerks 3 per cent, girl . O. clerks 7.6 per cent, and female sorters 88 per cent, in all these four classes, however, there are special regulations as to height and measurement which would tend to increase the rejections.
