necupied principally by the band of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers whose playing 'during the aftemoon was fully appreciated. As the time approached for the first event the spectators arrived in droves until every seat was occupied,

and those unfortunates who arrived late had to

content themselves with any point of vantage they could secure. One of the prettiest sights witnessed lately was the tiers of seats facing the water eccupied almost entirely by ladies, attired in all the colours of the rainbow and | looking delightfully cool to the poor mortals who were comdemned to remain out in the sun. Saturday's proceedings were not meant in any way to be taken seriously, but as a wind up to the swimming season and the committee are to be congratulated for the way they have kept the interest alive and the members together. In no small way has the success of the past season been due to the untiring efforts of the Steward; Mr. C Lesbirel, and we are perfectly willing to believe that after serving the Club faithfully all day he dreams of fresh efforts all aight. Such services under the direction of enthusiasts like Mr. Kennet, Mr. E. A. Sargent, Mr. Hazeland and others necessarily brings about the success that has crowned the efforts of the Committee during the past year. The 1995c one serious event of the day, was the dead heat between 5. R. Moore and N. H. Alves in the four lengths handicap. Both men op- peared to be in fine fettle, showing signs of careful training, and it was generally consider ed that Moore's handicap would just about pull him through. In a straight, out swim Moore with to secs. advantage would un- doubtedly have won, but three. turns, at each of which he lost at least 14 yards; while Alves was pushing off faultlessly, turned the balance in the other man's favour and Alves won by a length and a half in excellent time, Then followed the various events as given below viz, Tub race, Leap frog, Greasy pole, blindfold mace &c. In the meantime the real

(Hear, bear) In that project you have met with consistent support from the president of our Club, H.E. the Governor, and I may any that although nothing is definitely settled as yet, the naval authorities are disposed to view this important matter in a very friendly and sympathetic spirit. Members may there fore confidently hope, I think, that in the course of a few years this Club will be so fortunate as to possess a nice building upon the north-west comer of the Naval Yard ra clamation, with water sheltered from the pre- vailing wind in winter in the lea of that re clamation. (From our own. Correspondent.)

LABUAN, Septembar 12th. The Governor returned from his trip to Lawas and Brunel on the evening of 8th inst. He does not appear to have met with the success that he expected. The Petrel first called off Lawas, where the launch Mriapi had been previously sent to await him and in her he proceeded up river. On arriving at the town of Lawas, Pengiran Bakar, as was to be expected was, "not at home t" The Governor. then proceeded in the Petrel to Brunei and called on the Sultan who subsequently returned the visit, presenting the Governor at the same time with one of the famous Brunei gold em- broidered sarongs and the usual three war candies profusely decomted. At these inter views the Governor discussed, the ranting of Mengalong and Lawas to British N. Borneo Company, H. H. The Sultan gave very diplomatic reply, telling the Governor that he would raise no objections provided Pengiran Bakar wished to do so, well knowing that Baker will do nothing of the kind, except com
