LOCAL AND GENERAL:
DEAD CARTS are to be used in future for the conveyance of dead bodies to the Mortuary, His Excellency having sanctioned the purchase of carts against the probable outbreak of plague next year. These carts are to be locked by the Police upon the body being placed in them and only unlocked again on arrival at the Mortuary. it is to be hoped that this new departure will do away with the sight, only too frequently seen in plague time, of a couple of coolies rest-
ing in the street upon a dead box and chatter
ing or smoking. With a wheeled vehicle there will be no need for a halt the whole way to the Mortuary.
A DEAL OF DISCUSSION has been going on of late as to the dividend. Douglas Lapraik & Co. are going to declare next month. For the past eighteen months the Company's steamers have been doing very well, especially the two chartered by the Government; we hear it is proposed to declare a $3 dividend and amongst a large number of the shareholders i is not considered enough. They contend that after three years a larger profit should be available for distribution. The question is, is it better to build up a strong position or declare such a dividend as would cause a flutter in the shares for the benefit of the man in the street??
HERE IS A STORY, which ought to be true, It is lold by a trade journal of a master builder and a British workman. Having heard that the men did not start work at the proper time, the employer thought he would drop down about 6.30 ane morning and see. Going up the yard, he caught sight of a joiner standing smoking, with his kit not even opened. Simply asking
his name, which he found to be. Malcolm Campbell, he called him into the office, and, rehanding him four days pay, ordered him to leave at once. After seeing the man clear of the yant, he went up to the foreman and ex plained that he had made an example of Malcolm Campbell by paying him off for not starting at the proper hour, Great Scot, sir!" ejaculated the foreman, that chap was only lookin' for a job."
