umbrella a little tuft of weird light. On putting out his finger to touch it the flame vanished, and he drew a stream of sparks from the rib. We should not wonder if M. Delamare thought himself bewitched. A photographer of Berlin once noticed the fame on the fance of the Amazon Statue, and cleverly took perhaps the first and only picture hitherto obtained of it On the night of the sith June, 1880, between to and 11 o'clock, a heavy thunderstorm visited the town of Hamburg, and Mr.. Pogson; the British Consul there, observed a ball of purple light, aptently four to six feet in diameter, hovering in the air about 3o feat above the copper-covered steeple of the church of St. Jacobi. The light was a bluish red, similar to that of burning potassium, and he reckoned its brilliance equal to 10,000 candles. It came and went a scope of times, but once continund for about 42 seconds.

The wind is always from
steadily veers towards the north until after the display. There is always hail and snow. Those acts show that St. Elmo's Fire is indeed a termination of one cyclone; but Mr. Rankine sign of improving weather in that it marks the points out that on Ben Nevis at least it is almost invariably, followed by another cyclone and a spell of bad weather.
As regards the distribution of the phenomenon, some statistics huve been compiled from ships' logs by Captain Hallermann, of Hamburg. These show that it is nearly always accom- panied by hail, snow or rain, and high winds, and frequently by thunder and lightning, It seems to occur oftener in the northern than in the southern hemisphere, and during the winter a ontbs rather than in summer. The likeliest region for its appearance is, he thinks, the wes- tern half of the seas extending Irum 30 degrees of latitude towards the Poles, in the zone of the trade winds it is seldom or never seen, and it is rare in the tropics between 10 degrees, on either side of the Equator. In a few cases the barometer rose, or remained steady; but in general it fell. Captain Hallermann thinks that it generally occurred in front of a depres: sson; but this does not agree with the careful and systematic observations of Mr. Kankine. There is room for more intellectual light on this curious natural flame. In addition to cor rect observations on the four elements of the weather accompanying it, we require photo. graphs, and spectroscopic observations as well as measurements of atmospheric electricity, Then, and not till then, shall we fully under stand. The time will not be thrown away, for in matters of science the veriest trifle is worthy of investigation, and this, wild, capri-
St. Elmo's Fire is occasionally acen on the paks of rocks in high mountains such as the Andes and the Himalayas; but the finest dis plays are observed on elevated forests, in which the edges of the leaves, and espcially the needles of the pines act as natural lightning rods. At the beginning of 1878 the pheno menon was witnessed in the Hartz Mountains at several oints. At Blackenburg, for instance, after a series of storms, the air was so electric that a walking-slic held up became tipped with a flame five inches long and three inches wide At Doblitz, in the midst of a storm of steet the twigs of a grove of trees were seen to blossom with the fire. Daring a thunderstorm at St. Cergues, in, the Jura, in the autumn of 1879, an entire forest f pines was wrapped in a blaze and presented a magnificent spectacle.cious meteor, though apparently the sport of
the elements, may lead us, like the jester's wit, About the sune time a remarkable display was

A furious storm came on, with sudden squalls of wind bursting through the fissures of the rocks, and thunder reverberating in the gorges. A fash of lightning seemed to blind them for the moment, and on "recovering their sight they found to their astonishment that an aigrette of
fire appeared on their hats, and their beards, hair, and clothes emitted sparks. One of the party was covered, with a garment of light, as if he had bathed in phosphorus. A neighbouring forest was also streaming with fire, and they compared the scene to the "Walpurgis Nacht," which indeed may have originated in a similar spectacle.
Now that meteorological stations have been planted on some of our highest summits, we are beginning to study the phenomenon in a "truly scientific-manner. At the observatory on the Obir, in Corinthia, a display was seen about B.15 pm on 11th October, 1884; the tops of the telegraph poles, the wires themselves, and

On the Cruz, Miss C. 9th September, 1887, he was rewarded by a rare Coorubes, G. exhibition of St. Elmo's Fire. A ridge of high pressure lay over Central Europe at the time, and it had rained all day on the Sonnblick with a south-westerly to southerly gale, · The bare- metric pressure was 20.7 in. (the normal being 203 in.), but it was falling irregularly, and the temperature was 37 degrees Fahr. About 6 p.m. the wind suddenly veered to the north, the pressure rose, the temperature fell to 30 degrees Fahr, and the rain turned to snow and sleat: Brushes of violet light were now seen outside the tower on the points of the lightning-rods, the cups of the anemometers, and the tips of the rocks. Similar brushes streamed 'from the head of the observer and his outstretched hands, and were attended by a crackling noise
and a pricking sensation. The apparition con- tinued till the wind fell to calm and changed to | the south-west, and the pressure became settled. The temperature soon rose above
the freezing point, but the snow kept on falling for some time. Since then it has been found that St. Elmo's Fire generally accompanies the snowstorms of the Sonnblick, and it is
about as often positive as negative. Moreover, the positiv, find appears to follow. reddish lightning, while the negative kind follows bluish lightning. Thus, as had been surmised, the
