INTERVIEW WITH MB,

KRUGER.

Paris, August 3rd-The Figare to-day pub lishes the following account of an interview which one of its staff had with Mr. Kruger at Scheveningen, recently. Mr. Kruger said. that he had not been able to verify the statements of Lord Kitchener with regard to

the cruelties towards British soldiers with which the Boers are charged, and added, "During the twenty-one months that the war has lasted this is the first occasion on which such charges have been made, and it seeme to. me that they are intended as a reply to several reparts made by the Boers against the in humanity of their opponents." Mr. Kruger continued: "I consider that the Boers would not deserve to retain their freedom if it were true that in this war they had committed only: the twentieth part of the crimes which have been perpetrated by the British. I believe that Miss Hobhouse told the truth in her report'òn'] the concentration camp, but not the whole truth."

WE WILL NEVER GIVE UP OUR FLAG" With regard to the letter from Mr. Reiti to Mr. Steyn, which was published by tho. British Government, Mr. Kruger pointed out that, even if it were authentic, it proved nothing, for immediately after the date assigned to this. document the Boer generals held a council at which it was unanimously decided that the war should be continued to the bitter end. Replying to the question, "Is it true that steps have recently been taken with a view of ob

taining mediation?" MraKruger said, "Not by me. Certainly earnestly desire mediation, and if it were possible I should employ all my "strength to that end, but the events which are occurring out there in South Africa speak more eloquently than I could. If they do not obtain a hearing, what can I do? As for peace,

It is no

We are defending our liberty. When that is guaranteed we shall lay down our arms, not before. to be destroyed. The British told us that the war would be over by 1899. It is still going We have never been in want of food. Were every inch of the territory of the Re- publics in the power of the British, were Mri Chamberlain to despatch soldiers enough to cover our two Republics, the war would be pursued with the same determination in the British Colonies of South Africa. I have rea. son to believe that General Botha has not entered Cape Colony, but that he would enter if it were necessary. For that maiter the war has ceased to be confined to the two republics; It has spread all over South Africa. The exécutions in Cape Colony do not Intimidate the Afrikanders. They revolt them. No action could be taken, which could better serve our cause. From the blood of the martyrs spring the avengers. We will never give up our flag, the symbol of our freedom,

NO AMNESTY TO ASK FOR. "We cannot treat unless full and complete amnesty is granted to the Afrikanders. As for

ourselves we have no amnesty to ask for, being belligerents. With regard to the question of protectorate, if we wished to be protected, it is not to the British that we should apply. We
