out of your cuff with the proper flourish, you will be taken for a military man, and it pleases the girls immensely. Of course this new departure does away with the watch chain, but that can be made into a neat chain bracelet and worn on the other wrist. It should show well below the cuff, as this earns you a reputa- tion for being a lady-killer,

The latest puzzle, Mr. Editor, is Fazzle, supplied free by the Star Ferry Company, and it is to find out what the wonderful gates erected on each of their wharves are for. These gates are gateless, but are narrowed down about half way up by big baulks of timber, so that a space of some four inches only is left. Some folks say they are to weed out drunks, others that they are the dogs: entrance, others think they are meant for bicy cles, but most give the riddle up. They are evidently not for use and they can't, except by a very big stretch of imagination, be called or damental.. Can it be that they are allegorical of the difficulty of entering the ranks of the shareholders of the Company?

I have to congratulate nearly all Promo- the Staff Corps Officers upon their tions. promotion, Mr. Editor. I can't give

of rioting but I gather from the remarks of those who have come down from Fatshan to-day, that it is quite within the range of possibility that recourse will be had to that most peaceful, but effectual method of opposi tion viz. the stopping of all business by closing all the street gates As every street has its large gates at either end it will easily be seen how the people can prevent the collec tion of an impost which they consider unjust, without raising a fager.

With reference: to country cities and market towns, and the extra field tax, which will fail by the people that the money will never be heavily upon the agricultural class, it is thought paid, and any effort to obtain it will prove a failure. A case in point may be cited. In tho Shun Tak district the people have posted notices on their Ancestral Halls, which of any one will purchase these Halls then the course can never be sold, to the effect, that if

pay the new taxes: but if not, then payment people, who have a share in the building, will

will be withheld,

This is tantamount to saying, that the whole thing is proposteraus, und impossible and for our part, we do not see that the people are in the least to blame for taking such a view of the case. !

ANOTHER SOURCE OF REVENUE. 'Speaking of taxes, there is a rumour current in the city, that the question of legalising by license all houses of ill-fame is being discussed with a view to increasing the means of re- plenishing the empty coffers. Gambling is bringing in an enormous sum annually and it in doubtless argued, that having in respect of one vice broken their great regulations they may as well go the whole length of the gamut and legalize another form, and thereby reap a rich harvest.

What will be the result of such a lot of Captains and Majors running about 1. don't quite know, but I suppose things will quiet down after a time. Naturally there has been a great run on stars and crowns, but they have not sported them yet, as the Gazette is not expected to arrive until the next mail Many of the subalterns who have got their companies are looking round for some way to add to their dignity, and I notice that some are talking of adopting the single eye-glass. If you meet a nan in "the street after this who, wears a single eyeglass and drops it inadvertently now and again, you will be quite safe in addressing him as Captain.
