"。,,Wa:i-1་ཧྥ་ This was a very interesting event, but at first looked as if it would prove rather a disappoint ing one, as man after man failed to reach forty-five feet. The tide was rather against it too, and some of the competitors drifted back two or three feet before they babbed up. Others were drified right round, so that their feet were towards the winning post. Hun- phreys proved an easy winner, covering 55 ft. 6in. by a very clean plunge. Loureiro plunged into second place with 52 ft. 9 in. to his credit, and F.M. Roza, Pereira was third for stk. Of the rest very few reached the 48 foot mark. 45:39 pm-FOUR LENGTHS, Handicap.

The twentieth annual general meeting of the Hongkong 'St. Andrew's Society was held in the City Hall on Tuesday evening. There was an attendance of some forty Scotsmen, and Hon, T. H. Whitehead, Vice-President (is the absence from the Colony of the President, Mr. J. McKis), presided."

Stewart Lockhart), C.M.G., said: Mr. Chairman and, gentlemen, the im portant and pleasing duty of proposing the election of President of our Society for the ensuing year has devolved upon me, and it is with very great pleasure that I rise to discharge that important duty, especially as, an this oc casion, it is a very easy one, as a name I am about to bring before you is a name that will meer universal satisfaction. I have much pleasure in proposing that Mr. Whitehead be elected our President (applause). Mr. White- head is so well known to you that it is needless. for me to enlarge upon his many good quali ties. He has been on the Committee for many years, and last year, was elected our Vice.. President. I am sure that the duties of Fre sident will he discharged with satisfaction by Mr. Whitehead, and I am sure the motion will be carried with acclamation (applause).

Mr. Whitehead Fellow Scotsmen, I would. rather that this honourable position had been placed in the hands of one more qualified in many ways to fulfil it than feel that 1 possibly can do. ELECTION OF VICE-PRESIDENT. Hon. J. J. Bell Irving said-Mr. President and Gentlemen, I consider we have been
