me, I assure you I will do everything in my power to further the interests of the Hongkong St. Andrew's Society.
ELECTION OF SECRETARY AND TREASURER. Captain G. C. Anderson proposed the election of Mr. David Wood as Secretary and Mr. Peter Dow as Treasurer. Referring to Mr. Wood he 'said they all knew the work he had done in the past, and it was peedless forhim to pay anything. Mr. Brown seconded, remarking that if both gentlemen had sufficiently emphatic burdens upon them lie hought they couldgrafely look for good work from them.
The motion was carried, and both gentlemen in suitable terms accepted office.
THE BALL.
Mr. R. Shewan, in the course of a few very
humorous remarks, proposed that St. Andrews Day be celebrated by a Hall on the same lines as last year (applause).
Mr. J. F. Hough seconded, remarking that everyone who attended last year's Ball was of the one opinion that it was a success.
י.
The Secretary pointed out that St. Andrew's
Day this year falls on a Saturday, and they would probably have to make the dance take place' on Friday, the 29th November.
Mr. Shewan altered his motion to this effect,
and it was unanimously carried.
THE RETIRING PRESIDENT. Mr. Roberison proposed a hearty vote of
thanks to Mr. James McKie for the very valuable services he had rendered. Good wine requires no bush, and it required no cloqueat words of his to sound the praises of Mr. McKie. He was known all over the East as the prince of good fellows, and a first-class Scotsman. He (the speaker) thought it would be a graceful thing for the Secretary, on behalf
of the Society, to write to Mr. McKie and tell him how much they appreciated his services, how much they were indebted to him and how much they thanked him (applause).
I
The Chairman seconded. Every word Mr.. Robertson had said had been fully justified by the indefatigable and zealous efforts of Mr. McKie when he entered into anything of the kind.
The suggestion was carried unanimously. COMMITTEE.
The members then voted for a Committee.

During the counting of the votes, the Chair. man said the life of a Society of that kind depended upon the endeavours of its members The duty devolved upon each member to bring fresh ani new blood into the Society, There were, he believed, quite a number of Scotsmen. who had recently arrived in the Colony, and he thought they would be not only doing these new arrivals a benefit but they would also be doing the Society a good turn by asking them to come into the fold of true Scotsmen (applause). He therefore trusted that each member would recollect that he lind a duty to perform to the Society and to his fellow Scots- men who were not members of the Society (applause)
This was all the business, and the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairs inan, proposed by Mr. Stewart Lockhart.
LAUNCH BOILER EXPLODES.
The Forchow Echo of the 31st ulto. says:- The U.S. Cruiser Wilmington, Capt. Prime commanding, arrived at Pagoda Anchorage from Amoy yesterday morning. As their steam launch, containg five officers and several sea- men was coming from the Anchorage to the city, they had just passed the head of Green Island, when an explosion of its boiler occurred. The entire top of the boiler was blown high into the air, but strange to say not a person on board was seriously hurt; save a few scratches and solled summer suits no injuries were sustained. The launch was rendered useless for the time being and later in the day was towed back to the vessel at Pagoda. The explosion was heard at Ewo, and other plones in the lower part of the settlement, and persons who happened to be looking in the direction of the launch say the boiler head went higher than the top of the masts of a junk near by, The cause of the accident has not been deter mined.
