· PROCEDURE IN THE CASE OF INDICTABLE OFFENCES.
To save time I pass that part of my paper which relates to procedure before the Magistrate and proceed in consider procedure between Committal and Trial.
FUNCTIONS OF THE GRAND JURY. IN ENGEND AND ATTORNEY GENERAL IN HONGKONG,
The Magistrate having committed for trial, the accused, in England, either remains. in custody till the hearing of the case by the Quarter Sessions or the Judge of Assize as the case may be, or else procures bail. which will generally be allowed, except in cases of very serious crime where the punishment is likely to be so heavy that the accused would, in all probability, prefer to forfeit the recognisance of himself and his sureties, and run away rather thas appear and take his trial.
In this Colony, there are no Quarter Sessions but, what is more advantageous to the accused, amonthly sitting of the Supreme Court which ensures the speedy trial of all accused persons and prevents the delays which are often com plained of in England.
The Hon. H. E. Pollock asked for a hearty vote of thanks to His Excellency for presiding at the lecture. It was the first time H.E. had done so, but he hoped he would do so frequently in the future.
The meeting then terminated. !

H".CO. R.W.F we have a public prosecutor. The Aurney General has the depositions submitted to him by the Crown Sofieitor and considers the case carefully,
He has power by Ordinance to emit the case back to the Magistrate, if he is of opinion thit the accused person should not have been committed for trial, but should have been dealt with summarily. In the latter base he can direct the Magistrate so to deal with the
matter.
The Attorney General can also refer back the documents to the Magistrate with difce tions to re-open the inquiry for the purpose of taking further evidence. These powers are not often used but they are useful powers in possess. As a general rule, the Attorney General prepares the formal charge or infor mation or (as it is now called under the new Procedure Ordinance, No. 13 of 1889) the Indictment against the accused.

The Engineers took the kick and started the sphere towards the east goal. Barlow got the ball and compelled Johnson to save a hard shot, which he did in fine style. Even play in mid- field followed for some time, neither side holding much advantage. Eventually, however, Graham got the ball and sent it across to Povey. Some good passing was seen; Shield secured and sent it to Dewhurst who scored with a good high shot, after ten minutes play.

We have not heard that Sir Clande has taken 10,000.00 any action in regard to the Brooks murder or 67,893-47 whether he intends to take any. I shall not be surprised if nothing is demanded. The attention $105,215.56 of the Legation is at present, I believe, centred 3,484-14 and the new first Secretary is, I hear, keen on in a Fancy Dress Ball to be held on the 18th dancing, so the apologies and promises tendered 97.165.19 by the Throne will doubtless be all sufficient.
