The Rolief of Kimberley. There are indications of a great engage ment pending at Spylfomein. -

It was now inevitable that the ill-fated vessel could not float much onger. The water was rapidly increasing in her hold, the fires had been extinguished and she was gradually sinking by the stern. The boats had all been smashed up by the seas which had all the time been washing over her, with the exception of one which was very much damaged, so the rafts were got out, and the crew and officers got down on thein and floated gift clear of the steamer,

FOOTBALL COMMENTS,

-The Club have won their last two matches fairly easily and the tean as a whole and the forwards in particular, have greatly improved in their play. The changes that have begu made in the arrangement of the cleven have evidently been beneficial, when Danby has played once or twice more in the centre he will: do very wall there and an increased goal re- cord should be the result Ross, who has taken his place on the wing has been playing very well and centres capitally and in good time and he and Green combine very well to gether. There is no doubtion that Looker's going back is also an improvement and if Pinckney can only be induced to play regularly the defense should be very strong-

Hancock, who has, at present, taken Looker's place at half, plays very well when his side aro is not nearly pressing, some of his passing to his forwards being excellent, but he so good in defending. He does not display nearly enough dash in tackling his men which is rather curious as, up till last season, he was entirely a Rugby player, and when a Rugby man takes to the other branch of the game he is generally more given to "busting in to his opponents than to anything else. Of course in friendly matches here, it is not, so material, the great thing generally is to get a limesnian at all, but in Shield matches the linesmen stipule be selected with care before hand as they are at home and it is essential that they should be footballers and have a thorough knowledge of the game.
