ENEMY'S POSITION, Any of Remington's scous found the Boers eight miles to the north of the Orange River on the 19th of Novembri..

Thereupon a general advance of the British forces, was ordered, and as the Boer strength seemed concentrated upon Tin-tan-yonihill, near the centre of the ridge referred to, an attack in force was directed thither.

The 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Re- gintent, led by Lieutenant Colonel E. P. Wil- ford, and the 1st Battation of the Devonshire Regiment, led by Major C. W. Park, stormed the front of the Boer position, under a whither. ing fire, while the Naval Carabiners, led by Lieutenant-Colonel E. M. Greene, the 1st Bat talion of the King's (Liverpool) Regiment, led by Lieutenant-Colonel L. S. Mellor, a batalion of the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and the Natal Imperial Light Horse, assailed the Boer posi tion from the read

The Gloucestershire Regiment suffered most severely, subsequently returning 6.4 casualties. The gallant colonel and 14 men were killed, and several of the other officers severely wounded.

At the back of the bill the Boer sharp-shooters were well under cover, and maintained a splendid ride duel with the attacking forces. Therein the colonin! arksmen of the hiperial Light Horse completely eclipsed the Boers,

Towards the close of the fight a brilliant charge of the British and colonial troops forced the Boers to retreat from their main position to another spur of the mountainridge, known as Matawan's Kop.

This position was shelled by the British artillery with such excellent effect that the enemy soon abandoned, and retreated westward.

SA CAPTURED RUNNER.
