But the best part of Mr. Tsure's story is yet to come. We only hope that he may not be found to be a second Rougement. Anyhow Mr. Tsuru declares that he has also discovered another happy family of 20 foreign women, their ages ranging from 15 to 18think of it! They live 14 milles from ML Ishibetsu, and not in Yuuokawa-mura, Kameda-gori, five miles so far from the Uwa-yu-no-kawn hot springs, from Hakorlate. Honi soi qui mal y pense... for a discreet, matron of fifty keeps on eagle eye on these young ladies, who are described as very handsome. He interviewed the matron, who seemed quite communicative. These devotees wear much the same sort of dress as the Ishibetsu recluses, and observe the same doors, but confine themselves to the inner discipline, except that they do not work out of 4.M. rooms, where they spend their time, in Bible reading and prayer. Mr. Tsuru, wicked man, asked permission to inspect this room, but was refused. The building in which they live is a large and handsome one, and stands in the midst of grounds extending over 300,000 fsubo, registered in the name of a Japanese in Hakodate named Asaka, In the vicinity of the site, there is a mountain path leading to Kawakmi from Hakodate and the expense of repairing the road is entirely borne by the recluses who occasionally give money or rice the members are uncier a strict vow of celibacy, to the poor in the neighbouring villages. All and those who have husbands already are for- bidden to see them again, as long as they
remain members of the sect. With reference to this story which is now a topic of conversa oftion among the public generally, M. Harmand, the French Minister at Tokyo told a Verodzu representative, that the male recluses at Ishibetsu came to Hokkaido some 15. or 16 of the Governor of Hokkaido, in connection years ago, and are living there by permission
