The house, considering the numerous and highly attractive entertainments that are now running in Hong. kong, was woll attended, many of Hongkong's elite being noticeable in the stalls. A most successful programme, was provided, all the best of former items being retained, while new features have been largely introduced. The Sisters, Warren in their daring aerial flights, were eminently successful and received. applause from the spectators,

ANOTHER MAHOMEDAN
REBELLION.
PEKING, March 23rd. News has been received from Linchou, capital of Kansu province, that the Mahomedan communities to the northwest of that city known as the Salah Mussulmans, the most savage and bigoted of that faith in the Chinese dominions have rebelled. The green sacred Banner of the Prophet has been unfurled by their Akhoon, or Chief Mulla, and the -word passed to all the Mahomedan town- ships in Kansu, Shens, and Chinese:

The Comical Mule with its rider, a monkey, were exceptionally good and deserve a visit by those who have not already been to see them. Professor Bristol when announcing the ten minutes interval also informed his heaters, that there would be only two more performances, to-night and tomorrow, Thursday's one being under the patronage of His Excellency the Governor.
YOKOHAMA LETTER.
[From our own Correspondent.)
YOKOHAMA, March 18th, 18gy. "The other day a meeting was held for the purpose of forming a St. George's Society here. The meeting was a decided success, the aims of the society being announced to be first charity, and secondly the observance of gt George's Day. One gentleman at the meeting called attention to the fact that Australians re garded themselves as Englishmen, and it was decided that Colonia's of English extraction should be admitted as members. The Extract of English" colonials will doubtless feel highly honoured at being allowed such a privilege.
The musical community here are being treated with some measure of liberality this season
The Amateur Choral and Orchestral
Society, under the conductorship of Her Junker, are giving a series of excellent concerts at short intervals, the next one being announced for next Wednesday. Since his appointment as conductor Herr Junker has worked up the chorus and orchestra-especially the later to a high state of efficiency, and the short period occupied by them in getting an entirely new programme ready is very gratify ing to the music-loving public and highly creditable to themselves. Then we have the Literary Society fortnighaty meetings, at which a paper-and invariably a good one-is givan by some lady or gentlemen, the proceedings. being enlivened by first-class musical items, vocal and instrumental.

Advisory Board, that it will hold in Philadelphia, in October 1899; a Universal Commercial Congress, together with a commercial exposi tion. You are urgently requested to, make such arrangements as will admit of the attchdande of good delegation from your Chamber.
The Congress will be of world-wide import- ance. It will comprise delegates from com- mercial organizations in nearly every country of the world, and also special government delegates appointed by all rations on invitation of the United States Government. The Con gress will be in daily session, and each country represented will be expected to choose the sub- Jects for discussion and to treat of them in papers prepared beforehand. There will be given every opportunity for a free and fair dis- cussion of all matters of interest between the United States and all other nations. The meel ing being unchecked by any governmental control, is certain to arouse world wide interest, and its recomunerdations are bound to have their effect in shaping the legislation of this country. The importance of the Congress is such that its opening session will be presided over by President McKinley, and the whole Diplomatic Corps stationed in Washington will be in attendance.
"All the leading Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade in the United States will be represented, and the leading manufacturers and merchants, not only here but in all countries, will be invited to attend the Con gress as spectators. The delegates accredited from foreign governments and Chambers of Commerce will have an official character, and will be entitled to a vote in all the proceedings. Delegates bearing such credentials will be the guests of the city during their attendance at the Congress,
The Congress will be convened on October oth., Sgy.

In addition there were Bills dealing with the Customs, Patent Designs and Trade marks, copyrights, Commercial Codes, &c. Most of the foregoing imposed increased taxation, and were passed for the purpose of making up the deficit in the Budget. A telegraphic dispatch from Viceroy Tad of Kansa lias been received, reporting the massacre of over thirty Chinese Buddhists by rebel Salah Mahomedang and that a general conflagration is feared with the return of warm, weather in April or May, when communication becomes casier, unless a strong army is assembled In Kaniu. The Viceroy complained of "the" withdrawal to Peking of Generals Tung Fu-hsiang and Chang, Chin with their best troops whose sanguinary battles for the past 20 years against the Mahomedans have made them greatly feared by the latter, not only in Kansu but also in Chinese Turkestan, and that, in consequence, the whole Northwest is practically defenceless and at the mercy of the Mahomedans if they should unite together and rebel. Unless substantial help in men and good afficers be sent to Kansu, Viceroy Tao refuses to accept the responsibility should trouble prise,
[Noli-General Tong Fuchsiang and his 25.000 well-armed savages were called to Peking, fresh from the massacres of thousands of rebole, almost immediately after the suppres sion of the last great Mahomedan Rebellion of 1896-7, that is to say, in the late autumn of 1897
General Chang Chun was General Tung's chief lieutenant during the Mahomedan wars since the seventies. He obtained even greater fame as a fighter than his Chief amongst the rebels and it was entirely due to his presence na Provincial Commander in Chief of Chinese Turkestan that the Tungants there, did not join their Kansu brethren in 1896-7. He was called to Peking also by the Empress Dowager soon after this coup flat, where he arrived Inst January with from 8,000 to 10,000 of his best froops. It there be any fighting in the near future in Chihli or further south this General will be certain to make a good fight of It, as he is one of the very few really brave and popular Generals in the Chinese army. All his gnting has been in the north-west provinces hence Chiang's name is not generally known in the cast or south, his fame having been eclipsed such men as the late Marquis Tio, the late Governor Lia Chimtang, and Tung Fuchsiang Recent dispatches from the north state that Generalissimo Jung Lu has appointed General Chang Chun to be his Chief of Stafi or Sentar Wing Commandant, the troops brought by him from Chinese Turkestan being incorporated with General Tung Fu-hiang's army, avelling the number of the Kansu Army Corps to nearly 40,000 men,dy—N C. Hoshi, the leader of the Liberal Party, has received an additional sum from the Govem- ment. Mr. Hoshi is now going to pay a visit to China and Corea, and his reason for leaving Japan at this time, it is said, is to escape the importunities of his colleagues, who expect to. participate in the spoils.

A large number of people are under the im- pression that smuggling is almost, if not entirely, a thing of the past. Then when the time came for her guest to return to America the Indy would ask, as a small favour, if the visitor would consent to be the bearer of a present to a dear friend in San Francisco. The present invariably took the form of a cushion, and it is useless to con Jecture how many such have been transmitted across the Pacific in this clever manner. - Such transactions are certain, however, to be discovered sooner or later, as was the case in this instance. A lady who had been entrusted; with one of these presents" became suspi cious while on the voyage and decided to cut open the custom when she did so she dis- covered that it was stuffed with Japanese lace, The lady was sufficiently sensible not to land the cushion, which was returned by the same steamer Another. Lady, innocently taking a cushion in the same manner, was stopped by the Custom House officials and put to consider able inconvenience before proving her-in- nocence. By a later steamer a third lady appeared, also with a cushion which the Cus toms officers found to contain the same valuable stuffing, and the bearer was arrested and kept in custody for twenty-four hours before being released by the authorities. This lady wrote a strongly-worded letter to her friend here who had favoured her with the introduction to the cushian lady" but how the latter fared when she found her schema exploded I-am unable to any Any traveller who carry a cushion may expect a very lively time with all their baggage at the hands of the Customs officers here, who, when sighting cushion, exclaim aynificantly.
