We have frequently pointed out that the Tytam and Pokfolumn resevoirs are not of sufficiently large capacity to supply the rapidly growing demands of the population. A reference to the water returns of the last two or three months will show at the average consumption per head per day has been less than last year, but still the melan- choly fact remains that we are short of water. The capacity of our resevoirs has been in creased and the collecting grounds. have been enlarged but apparently to very little purpose. What is evidently required, and it we believe will very shortly be recognis ed as being an absolute necessity, in the con straction of another large resevoir, with a separate collecting ground, which can be used either as a reserve supply or to supple ment the present one. It is not sufficient that our resevoirs should be of a capacity capable of supplying the population in years of normal rainfall. It is against extended periods of drought, similar to the present one, that it is necessary to guard, and the subject is one demanding the grave attention of the
Government.
