THE NATIONS FOOD SUPPLY IN THE FUTURE.

STARVATION AVERTED THROUGH THE LABORATO' Y,

The tests to which quors are objected in the Go- vernment Laborkery are sufficiently severe to woarant the Government Analyst passing them as harmless, and this oplaton is entirely sap ported by the medical evidence received by us aw by the records of the amount of drunkenness in the colony. There is no ground whatever fer the lion that there ex's, in orgkong deleterious quors of which a minell quantly produces udden and temporary lovanity in the consumer or the uppersner of having beed diugerd.

The analysis of thirty-one samples of the cheapest quos has shown that such liquors are not ende, inferlox, or idolerated, so that we fall to find that any evil whatever exists as regrads the conduct of the liquor-traffic of the colony.

Since the evidence of the Government Ass- lyst was taken a number of samples bavo brda submitted for analysis and four prosecutione have been insituted for adulteration (deficiency of strength).

9-It does not appear to us to be compatible with the pubile safely that The Food and Drugs Orricanes, No. 18 of 1895, should be dead letter, and we recommend that steps be taken lo order that largely increased numbers of samples may be examined in the Government Labora tory, so that as much as possible may be done to prevent the sale of any adulterated or dele- texlour liquors.

xo the evidence collected has shown that the drunkenners here is due to the quantity and not to the quality of the liquor consumed, of opinton that the chepner of liquor Is conducive to the increase of diunkenness. As mitu a very cheap, legislation should be undertaken so that this liquor or any quorcon- taining samshu may not 'be'wold'elther" directly or indirectly to Europeans,
