THE BRITISH MINISTER AT

PEKING.

The Fat Eastern Question and the present and future aspect of aids la China are still occupylag a large share of the attention of the thinking public in England, and justly so. There has been the maximum of talk and the minimam of action in connection with British policy la China, in fact, there has been such plethora of the former that very little more remains to be said on the subject and any one Attempting to write upon U is extremly able to lay himself open to a charge of plagiarising other people's ideas. Attacks have been made by more or less responsible persons in the Press, la Parliament, and on pubile platforms, on the Chinese policy of the British Government and on these entrasted with the carrying out of that policy, much of which, it must be admitted, has been only too well fortified by the outcome of our policy in Chian. The Saturday Routew, however, in the course, of an able review of Mr. Colquhoon's new book, China to Trans- formation, makes an atteck upon Sir Clande Macdonald which is, we think, entirely unjust fed and unjustifiable, having regard to lacts. The man who states that as Minister Sir Claude's faliora has been "Conspicuong and complete" can have very little knowledge of the amount of really good sell work, Sir Claude has done ler British In China, handicapped and fettered as he bar been by Chincar dapicity and procrastination on the one hand, combined with the Intrigues al others, and the criminal sariceness of the There can be Foreign Office on the other. very little doubt in the minds of those who have had the opportunity of stedying the trend of events on the spot that Sir Claude is a really ble Minister, and that bad he been allowel a free band, instead of being hampered by instruc #tone from home, the outcome of our policy in Chion would have been far different from what It actually has been. We do not pretend to believe that it would be Traprasible to find a better man to repres at British Interests in Pe.

THE BATTLE OF ALMA.

Tueiday, 70th lost, wasite anolveresty of the Battle of Alme, in which ctlon the King's Own Lancaster Regiment took part Sports were held at "Mcontain Lodge "In celebration of the event and the K. O. mo bad s segular "cll-day."

A brief account of the Battle will, no doubt, prove latcrcstlug.

The Allled Army completed its disembarka tion in the Crimes on the 18th September, 1894, and the following day commenced is march towards Sevastopol, the Russian force rotirlag before it until they reached a formidable position on the left bank of the Almas. This the Allied Generals determined to take by a direct attack on the 2015 September.

The King's Own Regiment was in Str J. Campbell's Bilgade, which formed part of the 3rd Division.

As the tack proceeded, the 3rd Division were ordered to support the Guards, and it was thus that the King's Own found themselves lying down in column ander the are of the Russian Artlilery behind the Guirds, ready to support their advance.

When the Gaurds commenced to move. The King's Own deployed and followed the Great diers the right battalions of the Guarda brigade nt a distance of about go or 60 yards.

The stream and high banks on the enemy's alde broke the regulailty of the advança, but no sooner had the men fairly crossed, when, the colours moving to the centre of the line, the whole fell tuto their placra without word of com. mand and advanced up the hill behind the Guards.

Against the Gaards brigade now pressed in column four bittallons of the Russian Vladimir Regiment.

The officer commanding the Grenadier Guards halted, changed front half-left on the loft com pany, and poured, valleys into the two left Vladi- At the same time the King's tnir Battalion Own received the order * Secilong-Right," sad moving thus prolonged the line to the right, Then wrapped with British Infantry the Rusilan Jorces commenced to retire.

A glance at the work Sir Clande har accomplished, in spite of the handicap under which he has laboured, will bear out an aster:lass, and show that bli ilare har heen neither conspicuous" nor "complete" as the Saturday's critic would have us bellers it has been. The opening of the West River and the Inland waterways to steam navigation, the opening of new parts, and the Kowloon extension to say nothing of the many minor concenfoos wrong from swilling Caí- nese statesmen-all point to an amount of solid work of walch Sir Claude may be justly. proud. Again, woold Sir Nicholas O'Connehave fearlessly accused L Hang-chang to his face being a bleed tool of Russia, however certalo may have been that such was the case?

In the prezent instance we are quite certain that if the feeling of the whole British commanity in China could beascertained, It would be found to be one of confidence In Sir Claude.
