At about two o'clock this morning the rebels made another of their big sttacks upon Malate. and for an hour the firing was very heavy. All the outer trenches the Spaniards had both at Malate and Santa Ana'are said to be abandoned and the Polvorin at the former and the church at the latter place are said to be their most advanced polatz.

These mercenary soldiers discharge their duties moderately well but are simply insupport able if they have the sightest chance to grumble. All the rows in the camp are on the question of iceding and for the slightest thing they desert once. There was in one year so many of these desertions on account of trifles that the treasury was found to be about three millions of dollars to the good in fortelted pay, etc. When the reason was cleared up it was found some ser- geants bad been giving them less than the exact quautliy of sugar stipulated for their tex and solely on that account all those men had Abandoned the career of arm
Immoralities, by the grace of God, are not wanting in the Reservations. An official told a soldier to help him cu! iplece of cloth and the soldier impudently said he did not fret locifned to do so, he was reported, brought before the tribunal and absolved. It came out not long afterwards that this folder had rendered certain personal services to a member of the tribunal which absolved him. I clie this case as a sample.
All this is not the sort of thing which will maku these men of the spirit capable of great acts of abnegation nor much of herolsTa in the defence of great national Interests.

NOTES FROM THE NORTH.

TIENTSIN, July 25th. The event of the week has been floods, and a general breakdown of the railway. Peltalbo waa visited on the 18th I think it was, by a storm which made the "Oldest Resident on furlough at the seaside, alt up and ransack his reminiscences for a worse. Pelaiho was extremely interesting under these conditions, and we might easily compile a pimphlet of annecdotes how most of the good folks thera spent that night. The general order of things was hont-round from room to room to find some corner where the reof did not let in the water by mistake, and where the windows were not mistaking their vacations and posing for the nonce a flood slices. In one case I know of a family who had to accommodate nice extra dislodged ones. But discomfort was not the only experience. During the storm or the two or three wet days succeeding it some serious accidents ensued. Thier henses neusly com- pleted, bat not tobablied, entirely collapsed, while the roof of the house belonging to the Agent of the Hongkong and Shanghat Bank fell in and narrowly escaped causing the death of the eldest child, a winsome little lassle of some Two or three summers.
