The following was the report submitted to the meeting "In submitting the Honorary Tren aurer's sccounts, the Stewards conɛkdfor them satisfactory although not quite so good as the previous year. The permanent brick stables and private stands were available for 1897 meeting, and plowed a grast convenience. Gymkhanas, ss la recent years, have been held on the Race Course under the suspices of the Jockey Club. Tee Race Cousso, compound and stande were leat for the Review and Chios. Tattos at the Happy Valley on the occasion of Her Majesty's Jubilee and for the Gymkhana subsequently held in this connection. The Coarse in in good order. T. F. Hough, Clerk of the Courte
The Chairman, after Mr. Hough had read tha report, said the report and statement of 'accounts wan satiafactory. They had received $1000 in. entries and nomirations and the interest was in excess some $900 over last vent. The rents from stands &c. amonated të $1353, to be pinced | to the lecreased interest. The payments made on the new bulidings now amounted to. $21,571.17 and with the amount expended last Year reached $31,648.61. Reference ww made to the success of the Gymkhanas and the Chairman said it was for the meeting to decide whether they should be carried on muasi next year. He proposed the adoption of the report, which was seconded by Mr. Sweetm And carried.

MACAO, 1st October, 1897. · The 28th of September, being the birthday anniversary of iks King and Queen of Portugal, it was kept at a gala day by the loyal inhabitant of this colony, Early in the morning, at noon and at sunset the customary salutes were fired. The expedition has determined two facts of prime importance to the scientific world. It has fixed once for all the altitude of Mount St. Eliar at 18,100 feet. The 5gures are subject only to such sight correction as may, change the total thirty or foily feet either way.
The expedition has also answered definitely and to the neguite the question so long asked by scientists as to whether or not St, Elias was at ons time a great volcano. There is not the
slightest indication of volcanic action saywhere.

Los Axarles, California, August 29th. The developments in the past week in the local off slivation bave greatly encouraged petro- leam producers. The Southern Pacific Railway Company has formally entered the field as a purchaser and consumer. It is reported that the comp-ny has had seven locomotives changed to crude oli barners within the week jest closed, and that two purchases of oll in bulk have been made by that corporation, one of 10,000 barrels and another of 20,000 barrels. The purchase price is not known.
