ERECTION OF A LIXIN FARM IN XWANGEL. A letter having been recalved (16th Jaly) from Messrs Arnhold, Katberg & Co, announcing the formation of a syndicate, nuder official sanction, to farm the lekin on kerosene and matches in Kwanga, the Chamber addressed a letter to the British Comal at Canton on the subject,
and on the 17th July received a despatch stating that the syndicate in question had been lastracted to suspend operations. (Caples of the correspon dence already published In local Press).

Mr. Wilkinson said this was a claim for $775 08 for work and labour done by the plain- iff for the defendrats. His cilent was a contrac- tor and at the end of last year or the beginning of this year he was instructed by the Chinesa Compradore of the Peak Hotel to do cert is work on the premises on behalf of the propilators, -varnishing and paloting various articles- which lasted some ilme. When he eppiled for payment of this sum-he was told by the Compradore that bla masters could not pay the plaintiff as much as the landlord did not gree to give him a further Ime of the premises. Mr. G. C. C. Master for Mestra, Llastend and Davis, and Mr. J. Hastings for Chu Kwan.
It appears that about May, 1995; plaintiff heard that Mesira. Linstead and Dávid had certain Chinese houses to let, He employed Chu Kwan to obtain leases of the houses from
them. Terms were agreed upon and shortly office of Messrs Linstead and Davis and palda befme July 1st, 1895, plaintiff attended at the
sum of money and finally Chu Kwan signed the lasse on his behalf. To was 'an undoubted fact that Chu Wa deposited $icon as security for the due performance of the terms of the, lears. The lease explied on 30th June this year and it was the balance of that deposit that the plaintiff was seeking to recover. Chu Wa handed the deposit note to Mears Llustead and Davis and they kept it antli September last, when they pointed out to the
