HONGKONG, Thursday, May 17, 1897,

NOTES ANd commenTS. We note with astonishment that the Government wharves along the line of the new Praya are being constructed in stone and solid, instead of in iron work or wood and open. We admit that probably the stone wharves will present a better appear- ance and last longer than Iron or wood, costing less probably for repairs, but they will certainly and in a comparatively short space of time cause an extensive silting up all along the face of the new sea wall. Projecting at comparatively short intervals Into the sea, they will obstruct in a very considerable degree the run of the tidal currents along the face of the wall, and will form a series of small bays within which sand and mud and debris of all descriptions is bound to accumulate and settle. We should have thought that plers supported on iron screw plles would be equally effective, cheaper, and less injurious to the future of the barbour. Will any member of Council at its next meeting ask for an explanation, or perhaps the Daily Press, duly inspired, will clear up our difficulties.

While we are on the question of plers and wharves may we call attention to [761 another matter. There ought to be special accommodation for the Kowloon Ferry launches. Either the owners should be per- mitted to construct a wharf for themselves, DAKIN, CRUICKSHANK & or a Government wharf or a portion of

COMPANY,

one should be set aside for them and fitted for their requirements. There is a large and an ever-growing population at Kowloon and the ferry traffic is increas- Ing daily. The present launches run every ten minutes. New and much larger launches are, we believe, in course of construction. At present the ferry launches having to use the general landing steps are often considerably delayed in coming alongside causing derangement of the service, or the passengers have to scramble backwards and forwards over another launch. If the Company had a wharf of his own or accommodation at a public landing place kept exclusively
