In the first trials the companies were deployed to fighting order, while the reserve was in a ravine behind the firing line. At given signal the dogs, with supplies of cartridges attached to` their little saddles, bounded forward to the men skirmishing allowed these to take from them their packets of catridges, and then returned to the ravine. THE JERVOIS STREET ARSON CASE. The hearing of the charge of arian agulast Wong Lin King was resumed this morning, The Attorney-General, Mr. W; M. Goodman, (instructed by the Crown Solicitor) prosecuted and. Mr. E. Rabinton (instructed by Mr. V. H. Deacon) conducted the delence.
The first witness called to-day was Acting Sergeant Angus MacCau'ay, No. 8, foremen of the Fire Brtade. Pa reached 99, Tery Is St. few minutes after the alarm was given on Apell 11st, and found the fire burning fiercely on the ground floor. He then described the finding of two dead Chinese in an upper room after the fire bad been got under, and he also saw a think body soon after, The room the bodies were in was untouched by fire, but II was full of smoke, The fire apeared to have began on the ground Alcor about 8 feet from a partition. This caught the celling and, as the Ruing fell It igalted the whole shop on the ground floor and the staircase. The front of the second floor was burnt by flames coming up and through the windows, Witness next described the finding of kerosine in tins under a bed on the first floor. In another room on the first floor ware two beda which appeared to have been left hurriedly, The inmates would have been unable to leave
