When other nations are subsidising their merchant ships, and arming them for self. defence, how can this country stand still in face of cuch competition? Surely it is time that our Chambers of Commerce should make themselves heard in support of their own Interests, and It is gratifying to find that Mr. Ben Tillet, that representative of the working classes of this country, has lately protested against allowing foreigners to deprive them of the labour market in our Mercantile Marine, and then Increasing the number of the unemployed, which is also a question which deeply concerns the pockets of ratepayers, who have to provide for them. It is to be hoped that the subject 1 bara introduced will be discussed withool Party feeling in the ensuing Session of Parliament on the question of manning the Navy, and that whatever Increased expenditure may be voted for that purpose may be directed towards restoring the nationality of our Commercial Marine as well as providing for the requirements of our War Fleet, In fact towards the common interests of bath
