Hongkong to London over the combined lines would be a mere trifle compared with the charges by the cable lines, and all business men throughout the East rejoiced at the prospect. The Companies, however, took the alarm and before the necessary connections could be completed negotiated a Convention with the Chinese Telegraph Department, offering certain specious advantages to the Chinese in return for an agreement to maintain the same rates over the land lines for through messages as the Companies were then in the habit of charging over their own cables. Fortunately this Convention, before it could be carried into effect, needed ratification by the Powers, and, equally fortunately, the Companies were so proud of their cleverness and success that they made public the Convention before It was ratified, with the result that - the agitation against it was so great that the whole arrangement fell to the ground and ratification was refused. From the Hongkong mercantile community a very strong representation and remonstrance went on that occasion to London.

The other two games were between the Club and the Rife Brigade, won by the former, and the Rifle Brigade and the Royal Artlilery, won by the Brigade.

The match yesterday was a very severaly contested one and brought out some excellent work, Captain Loveband, although not up to his nsual standard, being very brilliant, while Mr. Whitehead (back) was usually in his place and allowed fem chances to his opponents. Nos. and 3 also did steady work. The Clab finally won with five goals and three subsidiarios against two goals and one anbildlary, – Captain Loveband made three goals for the Club, Mr. Whitehead one by a very long, wall directed drive, and Mr. Koss the other. This gentleman a great acquisition to the Club, as he has had расск

practice in India.

Mt. May has placed the Folo players under great obligations to him by prezenɖfng, this "Challenge, Cup," which has been the means of increasing the interest taken in this našla sport, and has induced much practice and so gone far to make the game better known and better appreciateğin this polony,
