notes and' COMMENTS.

During the past week we have been endeavouring to find out what authority Mr. Huon McCallum, Secretary to the remains of the Sanitary Board, had for is uing the subjoined hair-raising order to the Inspectors of Naisances employed by the Sanitary Board:-

"It has been decided that every Inspec- tors of Nulsances has to study the Chinese language, providing their own teachers. The Regulations for members of the Police Force are to apply to the Inspectors of the Sanitary Board"

When it is known that this decree was Issued early this month and that several of the Inspectors in question have been upwards of a decade in the service, are well up in years, and draw beggarly salaries, the unreasonabless of this precious mandate becomes apparent. By what authority, un- der the provisions of what laws of the Medes and Persians or any other laws, has Mr. McCALLUM to enforce such an irksome and manifestly harsh decrea? Presumably he has received authority from some one, but we doubt very much whether it has yet been brought to the notice of his Excellency the Governor. If not, we sincerely hope that Sir WILLIAM ROBINSON will cause a searching Investigation to be made into the whole matter.

The members of the Police Force are, wo belleve, provided with teachers. Then, in heaven's name, why not, if it is really necessary to put this order into force, provide teachers for the Sanitary Inspectors? What is sauce for the goose Is sauce for the gander, and there can be no justification for making fish of one branch of the Service and flesh of another.

I think at present the best way will be to develop it economically, in the way any miser who expected to earn his ilving off it would go to work on it. Condacted to this way think we shall before long realise good thing from eur purchase. A large amount of gold has been taken off the land some ad years ago, close to the surface, but requires capital to work when you go some little distance below the surface, because there is so much water leakage from the Rockland River, as soon as you sink shafts below its level. - I may conclude by saying that you have a very good water supply; I may say almost too con- derable supply.
