ROBBERY WITH 'VIOLENCE.
A curtons commentary on the prosecution of Mesir. Redecker & Co. for breaches of the Arms Consolidation Ordinance has been
brought to light since the case was heard. On the 18th Inst.puty of three robbers, armed with revolvers and infwes, entered the shop No. 106 Praya West, early in the evening, and ransacked all the boxes, getting only a small sum of money for their pains, however. The theft was reported to the police long after the robbers had fled, and so far no trace of the purpetraters has been found.
Another robbery took place last evening under much the same circumstances. About 9.15 three men, armed to the teeth, entered the shop No. 124 Wellington Street This is
occupied by a dealer in raw aplum, who allows the front of bli premties to be vied as a salesplace for watches, The men presented revolvers to the benda of the only three persons in the shop, and commanded silence. They were then iled together by their queues and driven into a back room, where one of the robbers stood guard over Mor them with a revolver which he flourished about, threatening that at the least sound he would blow their brains out. In the meantime the romsinleg two men closed the door of the shop and went through the place. The oplam merchant bad
received $1,000 in notes during the day, and bad some #aco in cola besides in the shop. This money, in coin and noter, was all that was taken, none of the Jewellery being touched. When satisfied themselvas the desperadoes had that they had all the money about the niste the man on guard was called off and prisoners being informed that ti they raised catcry for hall so hoar, they would be shot, The robbers then left, and no trace of them te bound. It was not entli searly so o'clock that the poor fakiz raised the alarm, so it was in boar after the robbers were clear away before Detectives Staunton and Qetacey reached the Iceoc. There, beyond a rough description of the robbra and an account of the moneys stolen, notblog could be ascertained. The bold robbers had once again got clear away |

CRICKET.
THE GARRISON V. THE CRICKET CLUB.
This annual event was commenced yesterday, when the Garrison, winning the toss, elected to go to the wicket. During the afternoon they kept their opponents busy chasing leather, 204 runs having been made, wich only five wickels when stumps were draws. On recom.
when "oare" who have already pulled in a down to this no excuse few regattas come can be found for them, unless it be their hope to keep "fresh" for the finish. A good plan, indeed, but how many wins has this dodge accomplished? It is essential, especially this year, when there are so many events on the card to train time as passible to rowing, leaving off cricket for conscientiously, and give up as much and other games til aber the trial is over, There is not much time left, and all that can be done ought to be done. The towers this season are in need of a lot of teaching, and I RIA SOTTY that only one or two of the older nars kavo so far turned up to drill the griffins. At least two out of every

I am worry to hear that so many of the rowing men are lalden principally with fever and colds, but I trust balore this week is over, all will be well again Those training should bear in mind that after an outing it la far better to remain failde than to loiter about in the open.

CHAIRMAN'S CUP.The five crews entered for this have been more or less in training, although seldom has one of the boats been oat without a subetitale. Skott, and Sander's combinations have so far put in the most work and if the others don't put more i go into their outings they will have to whistle for first place. No. 3 should try to pull his oar through, No. 34 Ideas of how to keep his legs on going forward is rather erratic; how gets his car in too deep. Fritz Lammert has by far the strongst crew; their weight and strength ought to tell at the falsh. I don't fancy bis No. 3 very much although he pulls a strong "oar; whoever coaches him, must impress upon him the necessity of putting on more back work " and also to "square "bla shoulders. There is not much to choose between the Gwa bonts as they go at present and I can safely predict a close "fintah." LADIES PRIZE-I only know of three entries. Fritz Lammert's "boys have been out pretty often together and they form a very formidable combination; they have style but lack speed so far. CHAIRMAN, governor, OR MAYOR?
Considerable discasılan has been raised in Shanghai lately by the assertion of Mr. J. L. Scott, the Chairman of the Municipal Coundly that the dates of that office are so numerous and arduous that no man with a business of his own to attend to could properly look after both, and that therefore he could not again accept the post. He at the same time recommended that some scheme whereby a pald, and, as he suggested, a permanent Chairman of the Municipalty could be installed to serve the purpose. These suggestions caused a sensation in the Model Settlement.
