PANY, LIMITED,

The ordinary annual meeting of shareholders in this Company was held to-day, The Hon. J. J. Keswick presided and there were also present the Hon. C. P. Chater, Messrs. J. S. Moses, H. Hoppies, C. Jantzen, Poon Fong, D. R. Sassoon, (directors), A. S. Hooper (secretary), J. D. Humohreya H. E. R. Hanter, A. McConachle, G.T. Veltch, A. G. Morris, E. Joset Hughes, T. I. Rose, He Tang, J. H. The Chairman sald-Gentlemm, with your permission we will follow the usual custom and take the report as read. The balance sheet, which you have had time to car.fally study, will I hope be regarded as on the whole satisfactory, considering the general and commercial history of the year, seeing that we have been able to hold our own. Torning first to our mortgages, I am pleased to say that, excepting in case where we have written off certain amount for depreciation, we have an ample margin, and in other instances where we have had cause to be dissatisfied we have bad to difficulty in obtain in some increase. In connection with the excaptions just referred to, we have deemed it desirable to set aside $15.000 In view of a doubt as to the value of the security. I hope that in time we may and that such a full provision is unnecessary, but in the meanwhile we have deemed it predent to make it. Theinterest account you will observe shows an important decrease when compared with former years, attribal able to the fact that no interest has been charged on the properties during development in 1893. You will notes large sum outstanding In accounts receivable, and I think it well to explain that this le accounted for by the fact that a consider able amount of interest fell due on the last day collected subsequently, and besides a portion of of the year, which was a Sunday, and it was It was interest accrued but not payable until somewhat later: searly the whole mount has sicca been collected. As was explained by the Chairman at the leat annual general meeting, the large sum outstanding ander bills payable constars of moner advanced on mortgage, but which we have borrowed, and on which there in a satisfactory margin of profit. I am pleased to say that the rent account shows a highly satis factory progression. In 1Ɛgt this account stood at 324,496; in 1893 at $36,527, and in the past year you will observe that it has risen to $56,084 This large increase is due to the various pro perties formerly under development now having been completed, and capable of yielding rents, and I ace every reason to anilcipate that in the year we have now entered upod there should be a growing revenue from this source. The development of these properties has been a long and laborious business, but I bave confidence we shall meet with an adequate return. In con- clusion, gentlemen, you will be glad to know that the Company's prop tiles are all in a good state of repair, and we do not suiicipate muy large expenditure upon them during the current year, but your directors think it prudent to Carty forward the large sum they do in case of unforeseen emergencies. There are no other remarks that I need miske on the report, but before proposing its adoption I shall be very glad to answer questions that any shareholder may wish to address to me.

|

The Chairman said :-Gentlemen, there is very little for me to say in submitting the report and accosts. The property, which this Com- pany purchased at its formation, and intended Guished, only three more houses remaining to to poll down and rebuild, is now practically be handed over by the contractor; those which are completed are letting fairly satisfactorily. filed to yield a sufficient income to meet the interest on the loan which had been raised to enable the buildings to be erected, but we are glad now to be able to report that those buildings which are let give a return more than suficient to meet the interest and charges, and should this continue, we hope during the current year to be in a position to resume our place amongst the dividend paying Companies.

There being no questions, the Chairman pro- posed the adoption of the report and accounts.

Mr. Hunter seconded the motion, which was carried.

On the motion of Mr. Morris, seconded by Mr. Jordan, the retiring directors (Messrs. Chater and Moses) were re-elected.

On the motion of Mr. Rowe, seconded by Me, F. M. Graça, the appointment of Mr. Keswick

as director was confirmed.

On the motion of Mr. Machado, seconded by Mr. J. M. da Graça, Mr. F. Henderson was re-elected auditor

This concluded the business.

INTERESTING SHIPPING CASE.

JAPANESE IMMIGRATION ON THE CROSS,

At the Police Court this moming, Mr.W. C.H Haslinga presiding, W. S. Duncan, master of the British steamship Cromarty, as charged at the instance of Detective Inspector Stanton, who represented the Police authorities, with having committed a breach of the regulations attached

the Merchant Shipping Consolidation Ordin. and, 18 of 1891, by making a false report to the Harbour Master on the 21st inst. after bringing his steames into port from Kutcbinetry, in Japan. Defendant in reply to his Worship's question "What have you to say?" said: "admit, bot it was not false; merely insufficient information," This being taken as a plea of not guilty' the following evidence was led:-

He was directed to the Captain's cable and, after knocking, spoke to him through the door. At this point Mr.Okashi, a Japanicae, was aworn: in as interpreter for a Japanese witness.

Kinoshita Toko Matsu, a Japanese passenger by the Cromarty, aid he did not know whether or not defendant was Captain of the ship; but he remembered seeing him on board. He know there were eleven Japanese females on board, but believed there were more. He arranged the passage fares for himself and eleven Japanese women. The rate fixed was $15 each, and it was made with the Chinese compradore. When the steamer arrived in Hongkong the compradore came on board and demanded $10 per head, and in consequence of this the fall amount of passage money demanded had not yet been paid. Witness and the other Japanese passengers were taken on board the Cromarty out at sea-outaide the port of Kutchirot
