The next step of the mob was to destroy every official residence in the city, which, being accomplished. three oficials who had been selred, were dragged round the city with the charges against them pasted upon their backs. Firewood and provisions Are now being collected, and preparations are being made for defending the city against attack. On the fourth day of the outbreak, a norice was posted on the gate of the city to the effect that thote houses where Japaness were lodged would be demolished. Five Jap`nese who were staring in the city were thereupon at once ejected into the streets, but they managed to find shelter with s Japanese who lived permanently in the city. THE Steamship The respite was only temporary however, at the mob threatened to burn the Jap's house down if he harboured his countrymen, and therefore the refugees in great terror fled from the place, leaving all their belongings behind them, and after many difficulties they reached Jenchoan, where they at once reported to the, Consul. The cause of the outbreak le attributed to the fall in the price of rice, owing to the overstocked state of the market consequent.upon the probibition of export, and the heavy taxes levied upon mer- chants and farmers. It le said that some very in Suenilal men are enrolled amongst the rebels, and the local troops were of no avail.
According to Scoal reports the Vice Governor, 15 members of the family of the Governor, including his wife and children, and two other pesty officials were killed by the mob. The houses of the Governor and Vice Governor were first pillaged and then barned, and most of the official residences were plundered of their con tents. À conference of the ringleaders of the Insurrectionists has been held, and a petition has been drawn up painting out the cause of the outbreak and praying for the free dealing in glaseng (hitherto a royal monopoly) and urging upon the Government the necessity for saverely punishlog the late Governor of the city.
