The returns have only emphasized bis Signor Resseman, the Italian Minister, called ason Premtes Dupuy to-day and informed bim of the feeling aroused in Italy by the Alguet Morten Affair. NEW YORK, August 21st,

The Herald's Parls correspondent sums up the trouble between France and Italy resulting from the Algues Morten tiots as follows: The diplomatic world of Europe le anxious over the spect the relations between France and Italy have assumed by reason of the Algues Mortes incklent.

The truth about the trouble which occurred the other day in this town of Southern France between French und Jinlian workmen is that the letter were working for lower wages than the French. On Wednesday last a figt broke out and the Italians killed four French workmen.

On the following day a second fight took place, In which the French wirkmen killed eight alisos. The result of these events was that that was a great deal of excitement in Italy, and last eve-ing a manifestation was made against the French by mobs in Rome and other cities. Ia Rome the windows of the French Embassy were broken. Is Genoa the French dag was palled down. The entire Italian press is furiously angry with France, and the German press is echoing the cry. So far the governments of France and Italy have kept allent, but it is easy to foresee that the questions which will arise when the demand for apologies for the fnsulti offered to France is made will cause some very serious complications.

The managers of the three banks have been asked by the Government for a loan of 500,000,000 and. The bankers replied that it was impossi- ble to make the loan and recommended that an application be made by the Government to the commercial houses. If the curse should be adopted, it is doubtlal whether more than 100,000 solds, will be obtained. The Minister el Finance offered to pledge the customs duties collected in Callao for the payment of the loan, but these are already partially mortgaged to the Peruvian Foreign Corporation.

"Stanley lived on good food himself," said Peters, and allowed his men to live as the acgroes did. The French missionaries told me shey visited Sianley's camp at Usumbrir, and aw Stanley sting at the head of the table, eating European diet and drinking claret, while Emin Paaba and the other members of the party ste negra diet and drank water. Some of the white men of Stanley's party had to abandon their teris and sleep in the open air so that Stanley's wine could be taken along.

"I was also told by one of the missionaries that when one of Staley's companions had the fever and was not able to go on Stanley took a borsewhip and flogged him, saying. If white men fall down what will negrees do?'"

GREAT FIRE IN TOKYO.

Writing under date già st, the Tokyo Carrespondent of the Fában Gozelis states Hongwanji, that lordly face which reared its head so high, and was the first object which met the traveller's eye when yet miles away, were be approaching Tokyo from the south or east, has been destroyed by fire. The alarm was given about balf-past fire this morning, and in an hour's time the principal roof timbers bad fallen with many a crash. At vix the 100f wa one mighty surging mass of dames, ever and unen the flames shooting a couple of hundred feet or so above the ridge. The heat, 100 yards away from the fire was just sa bọt as one cated to face. Sheets of copper, red hot, were falling from the roof quite a distance from the burning mass. All the fire engines in Tokys seemed to have met at the fire and were throwing immense streams of water on the flimes. After the roof imbers fell in there was but little to see, is the outer walls, which were said to be of brick, stood and kept the flames of the burning debris well la bounds. The fire is said to have com- menced under the floor of the kitchen. This is

the second temple on this site which has been burnt within the memory of foreign residents.

Another correspondent in Tokyo writes: Shortly after 5 o'clock this morning the large Hongwani temple in Tsukiji took fire and, together with some outbuildings, was burnt to the ground. The blaze from the massive pile caused an intense heat, but fortunately there was no wind to spread the configration. The spectacle when the whole roof was in flames was indescri bably grand. The cause of the fire is as yet asknown. The financial loss must be immensa

"China without the Chinese" is what the Anglo-Saxon desires in the hot and sultry days of July and August. The Chapos hills, costing the Hangchow Bay, supply this great need, for though the plain is densely peopled, they have left the wild mountains to enjoy undisturbed the cool breezes from the Pacific.
