am a carrying-co-lle, 21 years old. I work $200.110.40 pretty regularly, carrying tire and all sorts of things. I get pay like others. I used to spend early half my pay on opium, smoking "drass." The rest of my earnings kept me in food and necessaries. I was not alck, either account of oplum or from any other cause. I could do my work allright, and take my meals. I wanted to save the oplum money, so I came to this place to be cured. I was told I could be cured here. I know several men who have been cured. They were quite completely cured. They used to smoke opluru, and they look mas- phine injections, less and less, and now they take nothing, neither oplum nor morphine, I did tot try to give up opium be- fite, as I always wanted it. The injection does not hurt. (Marks shown, on both upper arms.) I came every morning and evening. It comes on at once, and lasts a long time, say an hour or two. After that I do not have any bad feeling, nor headache, nor sickness of any sort, not want oplum nor more injections. I just feel all right, and that is all.

Swollen streams have delayed the arrival of the main body, but when the commanders reach there they may be able to capture the town and relieve Admiral Wandenkolk of his embarrass- ment by giving shelter to him and his force on land should he decide that he cannot fight the muiser Republica. President Feixoto has ordered the warship Bolivia and two gunboatin to Salto. This move was probably caused by the reports that Uruguay is aiding the revoid

NEW YORK. July 19th. John Charles Perry, an Englishman, 32 year old, has disapeared, and it is supposed that he committed suicide, He was a boarder at 106 Exit Nineteenth street, and he became despond- ent, the borders say, when he could not obisin employment. His funds were fasily so low that he appealed to his father in England, with, whom he had had a quarrel, but Perry the elder heeded him not. He then talked of morphine.
Penty's intimate friend in the hoarding-house was Angus Hamilton, a young man whom he knew in England. He left a note as follows: "My Dear Hamilton: Am so oblized to you for all you have dose, but am determined to cause you no further expense. Good-bye, and as you will never see me again, take my best wishes for your prosperity."
The last seen of Perry was on Tuesday night, and he then threatened suicide.
His father, Charles Perry, he said was a retired merchant worth $5,000,000, whose estate at Tyndal Park, Gloucestershire, is one of the finest places in the west of England.
Perry said he was a nephew of General Lionel Perry, who distinguished himself in the Egyptian war, and the late Hugh Conway was his couslo. Hamilton declares that Perry, on attaining his majority, obtained control over funds amounting to $1,000,000, while before that time his debts amounted to $150,000.
At 18 he was the owner of a stable of race horses, on which he lost a fortune. He was known as the "Bristol plunger," Hamilton says when he had lost $400,000 at racing he became an enthusiast at prize fights, but gave that up after losing $10,000 is ane night's betting.
