If we judge him by the Impression made, or the feel- ings which are stirred within him by the action of external objects upon some of his senses, we we should certainly say that a Chinaman Is anything but sensitive, for he seems insensible to sounds and sights and smells; he sleeps soundly and sweetly amidst a roar of noises groans and agonics that are worse than Millon's Pandemonium; he sits and talks andlaughy with the greatest indifference in the midst of volumes of smoke aking from the green firewood of the kitchen, and which would blind and send the for- elgner away with excruciating pains in the tender- est parts of his head: and be can cat bis meals with a relish in the dirtiest of kitchens, filled with smells of stinking garbage, by the side of manure vair, and even on manure boats, that crowd the canals of a large city ko this. Now the baby Chinaman undergoes the roughes, the redext, the noisiest of processess in the education of bis senses; at least the three of them that we have Just mentioned. Therefore as he grows up, his ear is not offended at the barshest of sounds; his eye scarcely blinks when enveloped in clouds of kitchen smoke and the most disgusting of smells affect not his olfactory nerves Thas viewed heis indeed a phlegmatic creature," a cold, sluggish, dull" àminal.
