Nor do we think that the Intrusion of more serious business Into the life of such an organization in any way takes away from its more pleasant side, and we would be glad to find the Shanghai Association displaying some such evidence of activity and interest in questions affecting the welfare of the mercantile marins as the Hong- kopg Institution has of late constantly exhibited. Besides, he must watch many hours from his time for sleep for "odd jobs" abcut the ship. The greatest hardship from want of sleep is, however, found, not while the vessel is under steam, but when she is going in and out of port, when the duties connected with loading and discharging cargo entall much extra labour. Of course, in the Northern trade, where the compradore's staff mankge the cargo, this remark In the case of does not apply so strongly Southern steamers on which the ships officers have to "tally cargo in addition to their more strictly nautical duties. After many hours hard work in the blare of the sun and the dust and bustle of loading, a man can hardly, bave his senses as fully on the alert as he should, when the ship goes to sea and he takes his watch, and this is certainly the time above all others that be wants bls wits most about him. It is well known that many ships have been lost, especially in the Southern China, trade, through this very cause. Again, every steamer tere carries at least three engineers, and though the life of those who look after the engines may be more detrimental to health in the long run, it is not more arduous at the time than that of the deck officers. If it is necessary to have thre: engineers, there is scarcely any good reason why the number of watch officers should be one les But, As Capt. Ashton implied, the Association did not wish to direct shipowners how to manage their vessels, nor do we, but we think that owners of steamships, and insurance offices, should not Alicgether neglect to consider that this Associa tion has expressed its unanimous opinion that every steamer should carry three certified watch officers, and that the foregoing recommendation is the outcome of deliberations as to how some of such camities an have recently occurred in China waters could be avoided and ships be generally better officered

Australia is pre-eminently the home of land- speculation and land-swindles. There is pro bably more land in the market in Australia, in proportion to the population, than there is in any other country on earth. The principal crop of this fertile continent is a harvest of arid boards bearing the tnscription: "These allotments for sale," and a hundred thousand fields which ought to be rich with fruit or grain grow nothing but a glaring placard apiece, announcing that a desirable property is to be offered by public auction.
