CAPTAIN Dorff, of the "Blue Funnel" steamer Memnon, trading between Sandakan (British North Borneo) and this port, is evidently a bumourous gentleman with a pretty wit A correspondent, who says he is willing to rouch for the accuracy of his statements, informs US that during the Memnon's latest trip from Borneo, three Chinese stowaways were disco- vered a day or two after leaving Sandakan. For persons to stow away" on board a vessel is a criminal offence, and can be punished by the laws of the country to which the vessel belongs; but English law would seem to be not nearly good enough for Capt. Dorff, who la stated to have taken the law into his own bands and compelled the Chinese stowaway! to CAITY coffins round the decks twice a day. This novel method of punishment may possibly possess merits of its own, but, assuming that all we have heard to be true, we are rather inclined to think that it might get the captain and owners of the Memnon into serious trouble if pressed before. the proper authorities.

The average annual export of Bombay yarns to foreign ports exceeds 350,000 bales, but since the end of last year, though the exports are se brisicas ever, the sales have been very limited and the consequence is that at the present 'moment more than 125,000 bales in Hongkong and Japan are either unsold or sold but uncleared. The godowns of local mills are quite full and it is feared that it will be necessary to restrict the out-pat; and to effect this a stoppage of eight or ten days a month is probable.
