SUPREME COURT,

June 9th.
I have stated above that Tamsul is a fictitious name for the port, that its real appellation is Ho-bey, and that there are but few, if any, signs ... of a foreigd settlement here. Where, then, you will ask, are the merchants who do a 5,000,00 taels trade? 'I will tell you: For the past twenty odd years the foreign merchants have resided at Tuatutia, close to the capital-up elver-and Many years ago they were settled at Banks, the there have their houses and tea-firing gedowns, northern suburb of the capital, a mile- or two further up river. virtually recognised by the Chinese as a part of
Banka was, and still is, the port. There the merchants sold opium and bought tea and sugar and exchanged various imports with the natives (or rather Chinese colonists) for native produce; chiefly for camph sad ten. Gradually they left Banks (owing to the turbulence of the population and the prevalence of malarial fevers there), and settled in the other suburb, Tualatia. And now I come to a very important part of my story, a portion of it, in fact, which I spared no palas to delve to the bottom of in the interests of forelen merchants the world. The facts may be set forth as interested in the trade of this part of follows:-
