There are still six foreign men-of-war on the Yangtere: the Porpoise at Hankow, the Titis at Klukiang, the Linnet st Wahu, the Swift at Chirkiang, the Palos, and the Inconstant, which left Chinkiang for Wabu on Thursday last.

to the accompaniment of the usual cafomalous and abusive ihouts.

The Father was received in the yamén by the secretary of the absent Chi-halen, and well treated. On the following he was put on board Jank, in company with two runners, and arrived at Chinking at noon.

Nothing was left standing in the enclosure- trees, bamboos, walls, even the hedge, were razed to the ground.

Chinklang, 2nd June, 3.30 p.m. Tanyang burnt, all safs.

CHEVALIER:

The Jesuits had at Tanyangta very ancient Christian establishment, dating from the previous dynasty. Pére Mathieu Ricci once resided there, There were many hundreds of Christians, and the relations of the Fathers with the country people had always been satisfactory,

(Tanyang is about 20 miles, or less, south east of Chinklang.)

The Nanking correspondent of the W. C. Daily News, writing on the rat lost, says: H.M.S. Porpoise arrived here Thursday after soon last. Two of our number went aboard Immediately and were very kindly received by Commander Burr, who expressed great Interest In our situation, Arrangements were partly made for a call upon the Viceroy, but this Intention had later as to be abandoned. The Commander and a number of his officers came up into the city on Friday to see for themselves the extent of the damage done by the riot, Saturday morning, in obedience to onders, the ship left for Wuhu. We are sorry she could not be detained here a few days longer, but her presence even for one day has had a good effect and, as everything was quiet on the surface, there seemed no suficient reason to telegraph for a change of instructions.

We need the vessel, however, not so much to afford present assistance, an for a possible emergency in the near future. The unsettled condition of the country generally Indicates that the trouble is not yet over. We still hope, there fore, that some gunboat will be stationed at this Important capital for a season. It will be of no use to send one after the handful of foreigners shall have been driven out and their property destroyed.

Reports come to-day of anticipated trouble at Kinklang. The long continued drought causes still further disaffection is is natural among a people who charge all pubife calamities to the sint of the sovereign. The situation is growing quite serious in some districts north of the river, Wells and ponds are dry, and people are drinking the slime-covered filth gathered here and there in the stagnant pools that remain. Considerable sickness prevails. There has not been enough water to get out the rice and the young shool that were started have withered away. The officials in the intervals that could be spared from-the-arrangement of the riots have been earnestly praying for rain Should it be with- held a few days longer, it will be too late for rice this year, and with a possible famine added to present troubles it will require no prophet predict the result.

Mr. Drummond's theory as to the origla and purpose of the present outbreaks (secret societies) is very generally accepted by well-informed Chisamen here.

The four days' festival in progress last night by order of the authorities.

The M. E. Girls' School is being rapidly put in repair, and there will soon be no trace of the rlot. The rowdies who, hoped for plunder are evidently disappointed, and are venting their spleen in (word) attacks upon the Viceroy. As insulting anonymous placard was posted to-day at the gate-way of his yamin..

The Zupno says that the slot at Nanking arosa partly from the following cause:-The Protestant Church at Keanhoyuen lost a male, which wa detained by a gardener living close by, who refused to return the animal. The case was reported to the magistrate, who gave the gardener Ico blows with the bamboo. This Just sentence, however, incensed the populace, and disaffection spread far and wide. On the 25th of May a Hot took place, the mob furiously attacking the Protestant Church until the soldiers appeared on

the scene.

The N. C. Daily News publishes the following particulars, supplied by Père Colombel, Curd of the Church of St. Joseph at Shanghal, of the recent riots at Tanyang -

Sunday, May 31st. Whilst the procesiion of idols passed off without any outward incident at. Chinklang, thanks to the presence of the Inconstant and Swiff, there were already rumours at Tanyang of the coming outbreak.

covered, seized by the authorities, and speedily decapitated as a warning to others,

The Custom House at Ichang was the scene of a riot on the 20th vitimo. The Foreiga Customs business there, says the Mercury, is conducted in a picturesque but highly antiquated building, which farmerly did duty as a temple to the Celestial deity corresponding to the Roman Jupiter Pluvius, and this circumstance has more than once led to serious complications with the superstitious Estiven On the day in question, it would seem that the country people who had grown tired of praying to the "Joss" to sand much-needed rain, went to the Custom House with the intention of supplicating the Idol, but were told that as the place is now occupied by foreigners, they could not go inside. Becoming incensed at this, and probably also thinking that Count D'Arnoux, the Commisaloper, exercised some Lofluence upon their idol, they expressed their determination of wecking the place. We are told by the native papers that the attack was 10 serious that the Commissioner and his assistants had to make tracks out of roach of the stones, which came in showers. But beyond smashing all the windows and breaking down some of the wood-work, no great damage was done.

Monday, June 1st-The Father in charge at Tanyang dispersed his scholars and the orphans THE British Steamer under his charge among the Christian familles In the surrounding country. The Chi-halen was absent, being at Soochow on a visit to the Fatal In the afternoon a crowd began to surround the Mission buildings. A military mandarin, named Heang, came about four o'clock with soma soldiers, Twice be succeeded in ejecting the crowd and closing the gates, but he was ROOM overpowered. As he was acting energetically, the crowd directed all their attacks at him, whilst the mission Father went about unmolested. At one time, Indeed, when the Father Interposed with a view to restraining those who were loudest | in their denunciations of the mandarin, one of the rioters said, "I have nothing to do with you I want to settle with him" (the official). At Te o'clock the rioters were evidently masters of the situation, and the mandarin urged the priest to retire to the Chi-halen's yamon. To do so he had to pass through the crowd which filled the courtyard and the street. They looked at him with astonishment, bat he was not even insulted, Then the besiegers proceeded very methodically to set fire to the church, the pricat's residence, the boys' school, and the other buildings. The orphanage being in diese contact with houses not belonging to the mission, It was not set on fire, but it was demolished and entirely raised. During the first few hours there was very Jittle pillage. Sailors belonging to gunboals were even seen stopping the robbers and forcing them to throw their plander into the Rames.
